Avengers: Endgame Director Joe Russo Fan Casts Chris Evans As Live-Action Wolverine

In the opinion of Joe Russo, Chris Evans has what it takes to be a one-man multiverse, as the Avengers: Endgame director recently threw his support behind the idea of the Captain America actor trading in his shield for Wolverine’s signature berserker rage.

Russo shared his fan casting for the X-Men’s resident Canucklehead during a June 23rd appearance on ComicBook.com’s Marvel Cinematic Universe-centric Phase Zero podcast made alongside his brother, Anthony, in promotion of their upcoming Netflix film, The Gray Man.
At one point asserting “Marvel’s doing it, DC’s doing it, everybody’s doing multiverse stories”, host Brandon Davis then inquired of the Russos, “If you had to work with Evans on another Marvel film, from the Multiverse, as a different character, who are you putting him in the movie as?”, to which Joe quickly declared, “Wolverine”.
“That’s a good call,” agreed Anthony.
“Evans has a great range and a great physicality and he’s really good at body control,” Joe said. “He’s an incredible actor, because he is absolutely – and I don’t mean this in a bad way – he is nothing like Captain America. Steve Rogers is very controlled and quiet, understated. Chris is energetic and funny and charismatic and he brings a lot of energy to set.”
“He’s just a really incredible actor,” the director concluded. “I’d love to see him do something like Wolverine.”

As touched upon above, should Evans actually throw in with Professor Xavier and his Merry Band Mutants, it would mark his third such Marvel superhero role following Captain America in the MCU and Johnny Storm in Fox’s pair of Fantastic Four films.
Interestingly, Evans himself also recently touched upon a potential return to the MCU, albeit not as Wolverine, but rather his aforementioned version of the Human Torch.

Asked during an interview with MTV News given in promotion of Lightyear if he had any plans to return to the blue tights of Marvel’s First Family, Evans laughed, “”No, no one’s ever come to me about that. I mean, I don’t exactly look the same anymore. That was 15, almost 20 years ago. Oh my God, I’m old.”
“But I really love that character,” he added, “but I think..aren’t [Marvel] doing something now with Fantastic Four?”

Met with both confirmation of the Fantastic Four’s official MCU debut and the counterpoint that “you can have six different Johny Storms” now the Multiverse is in play from MTV’s Josh Horotiz, Evans surmised, “Yeah, I guess that’s true. I mean, I guess all bets are off.”
“Yeah, look, I would love it,” the actor said. “I would love it. That would actually be an easier sell to me than coming back as Cap. You know what I mean?”
He continued, “Cap is so precious to me. And you know, I almost don’t wanna disrupt what a beautiful experience that was. But Johnny Storm, I feel like he didn’t really get his day. That was before Marvel really found its footing. So I loved that role and, you know, who knows.”
