The next installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse is being called a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong and, with that in mind, you have to wonder how Adam Wingard is going to top the slugfest in the last film.

The answer appears to be “team the two Titans up again, of course.” According to IGN, Legendary and Warner Bros. announced that “the two giant monsters will fight ‘a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own.’”

Other than the remark that the threat bringing Godzilla and Kong together as an epic tag team once more is “colossal” and “undiscovered… within our world,” there is hardly any indication of what it is.

Fans are rampant with speculation that the monster challenging the world and the Titans is another Titan and hopefully a classic Toho one we haven’t seen in the MonsterVerse yet — such as Destoroyah or Biollante.

The problem is, as DangerVille points out in their coverage, those two kaiju, created as they are by experiments with the Oxygen Destroyer and genetic engineering respectively, are manmade. They do not fit the description of an “undiscovered threat” that would be natural and ancient.

Their origins could be tweaked to fit the storyline and the premise of the Hollow Earth, but we have no evidence Toho gave Legendary the right to use any more of their characters. Secondly, it would be easier for them to create a new creature anyway and they’ve had quite a bit of luck with establishing the MUTOs, Skullcrawlers, and Behemoth in their lore.

That doesn’t mean they aren’t hiding an ace up their sleeve in the form of one of the kaiju mentioned above or something else, like Gigan or SpaceGodzilla. Extended lore points to the latter as a member of Godzilla’s species that could fly and may have compelled Titans to put their differences aside long ago and join forces to save the world.

Wingard promises to explore the origins of the Titans in the upcoming film and he may tell the story of the prehistoric alliance of Kongs and Godzillas before they have to team up again.

The follow-up to Godzilla vs. Kong is filming in Australia for a March 2024 release.
