In many ways, the Assassin’s Creed franchise felt like it succeeded against all odds. While the first game was rich in character mythology, it’s repetitive gameplay made it feel as if it was lacking in certain key areas.

This changed with the sequel, which not only completely blew the universe wide open, but also set up the opportunity for the franchise to grow. Assassin’s Creed is well over a decade old now, and has an extremely impressive lineup of games.

10) Assassin’s Creed: Project Legacy

Project Legacy could only barely be considered an Assassin’s Creed installment. That’s because it’s actually a free Facebook game that was rather short-lived. It is even mentioned in a lot of the Assassin’s Creed bonus content that fanatics of the game love to pour through.

While it might not have been the most impressive style of gameplay, Project Legacy was the first true installment that explored the lore of the series to incredible depth.

9) Assassin’s Creed Chronicles

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles is another game that could barely be considered an installment in the franchise. It’s mainly a 2.5D side-scrolling platformer series that allowed players to venture into various settings such as India, China, and Russia.

The gameplay was fun enough, and for fans of the series, it’s another opportunity to jump into the world. One of the great parts about Assassin’s Creed is its wide assortment of protagonists. Chronicles helped expand that roster threefold.

8) Assassin’s Creed III

Assassin’s Creed III was highly anticipated, as it was the first game in a long while to provide a new setting. Plus, not many games focus on the American Revolutionary War, so this was an opportunity to truly do something new.

Many fans were turned off by its protagonist, who was portrayed as stoic, but Connor Kenway is a truly tragic figure in Assassin’s Creed history. Plus, the game did a lot for moving forward AC gameplay into naval battles, as well as tree climbing.

7) Assassin’s Creed Origins

Assassin’s Creed Origins is the first game in a new generation of AC gameplay. It not only brought the franchise back in time to the very beginning, but it also was the first to explore a truly expansive sandbox style of play.

At this point, Assassin’s Creed was really starting to merge its love of historical fiction with real history. There are tons of opportunities in Origins to simply enjoy being in ancient Egypt, with a lot of information for history buffs to dive into.

6) Assassin’s Creed II

When compared to some of the newer installments, Assassin’s Creed II could be viewed as rigid and lacking in style. However, when compared to the very first game in the series, AC 2 is an incredible leap forward.

The game introduced Ezio to fans, who instantly became – and remains – one of the most liked characters in the franchise. Plus, this installment showed fans how Assassin’s Creed can truly be viewed as a natural story that merges science fiction and history to great effect.

5) Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation

Although viewed as a companion piece to Assassin’s Creed III, Liberation surpasses it in many respects. The story does a great job highlighting New Orleans during colonial times, and bringing a new viewpoint to the franchise.

Liberation also has a great distinction of portraying its protagonist through a tainted lens. Assassin’s Creed allows for this type of storytelling because of its “genetic memory” mechanism. It’s a game many fans may have overlooked because of its downplayed release, but it’s definitely one of the best in the franchise.

4) Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

The type of open style gameplay that was first introduced in Origins was completely blown up in Odyssey. There’s just so much to explore in the world of ancient Egypt, and Odyssey also has some the best DLC in the franchise.

This doesn’t even take into account the rich storytelling and mythology that Ancient Greece holds. Assassin’s Creed really dived headfirst into the history, and utilized it into showing how the world of Assassin’s Creed was born through war and leaders.

3) Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood

Brotherhood is a strange game in that fans were unsure if it was going to be a brand new installment or an expansion to Assassin’s Creed II. What they got was a brand new, full-fledged adventure featuring Ezio, as well as a groundbreaking multiplayer experience.

Besides the fact that the story was impressive, Brotherhood’s competitive multiplayer was extremely successful at merging the stealth gameplay of the Assassin’s Creed world into an online experience that has yet to be surpassed.

2) Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Fans of the franchise were impressed with Assassin’s Creed III‘s naval missions, but they were completely unprepared for how that system would be expanded upon in its follow-up. Black Flag delivered a true Caribbean experience full of sea warfare and pirate shanties.

Even more than that, the story of Edward Kenway was incredibly compelling. He was a man who wasn’t born into the Assassin Brotherhood, or fell into it by circumstance. His journey into adopting the Creed was truly his own choice, and made him one of the strongest characters in the series.

1) Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Ubisoft

Although Valhalla is still fresh in fans’ minds as the newest addition to the franchise, it’s still hard to top it. It combines great battle gameplay with an incredibly large world. That doesn’t even take into account the naval aspect of the game, as well as its story.

The Valhalla team has done an great job continuously updating it with new content. There are Viking festivals that coincide with holidays as well as mythological DLCs. It’s also worth noting the game has many different lands to conquer and explore – pre-colonial America being one of them.
