From ‘Moonrise’ To ‘Onimusha’, Here Are The Highlights From Netflix’s Tudum 2022

On September 24th, anime fans around the world were treated to a night of sci-fi, samurai, and even KPOP at Netflix’s Japan Anime showcase, Tudum.

A fan presentation ala DC Fandome, this showcase gave viewers their first look at Netflix’s continued efforts to expand their anime offerings.

Moonrise

The first of of Netflix Japan’s new IPs to be unveiled, Moonrise is an animated adaptation of Psycho-Pass screenwriter’s Tou Ubukata novel of the same name.

Featuring character designs from legendary Full Metal Alchemist and Yomi no Tsugai creator Himoru Arakawa and helmed by Attack on Titan director Masashi Koizuka, Moonrise will, as per Wit Studio CEO George Wada, follow protagonists Jack and Al as they undertake various hardships in the vast expanse of outer space.

According to Wada, the series will be brought to life via new advancements in animation technology, which based off of Moonrise‘s first trailer, appear to help facilitate a fusion of hand-drawn and 3D CGI animation.

“All action and scenery in the unexplored parts of the Moon will be illustrated using an innovative type of animation unlike any seen before,” said Wada. “My sincere wish is that this project inspires contemporary lives everywhere.”

Make My Day 

Another announcement guaranteed to make a sci-fi fan’s day, Mako My Day is a new film from Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt and MOONLIGHT MILE creator Yasuo Ohtagaki.

Set to be produced by director Makoto Honda’s Taiwan-based 5 Inc. animation studio, little is currently known about Make My Day outside of the fact that its plot will see a mysterious breed of creature clash with the human race on the frozen planet of Coldfoot.

However, Netflix Japan did give viewers a tease of the series’ aesthetic, sharing alongside this announcement a piece of concept art depicting a bipedal ropbot known as ‘Casper’.

The base sketch drawn by Ohtagaki, the design of the ‘Casper’ was ultimately refined by the Make My Day head of mechanical design, Macross and Diaclone creator Souji Kawamori.

Make My Day mobilizes its way onto Netflix in February 2023.

Gokushufudō The Way of the Househusband Season 2

The Immortal Dragon made his domesticated return at Tudum with a new trailer for the second season of Kousuke notoriously The Way of the Househusband.

Alongside Tatsu (CV: Kenjirou Tsuda – Kishibe in Chainsaw Man), the series’ new trailer also confirmed that both Tatsu’s former Yakuza associate Masa (CV: Kazuyuki Okitsu – Zantetsu Tsurugi in Blue Lock) and his former rival Torajirou (CV: Yoshimasa Hosoya – Shoutarou Hidari in Fuuto PI) will be back for more misadventures and shenanigans.

Not only that, but they’ll be joined by a variety of newcomers, including Tatu’s self-proclaimed Japanophile neighbor and seasoned grillmaster Bob, as well as Yakuza-turned-‘dope’-gangsta-rapper Goda – a man whose criminal crew was one of the many dismantled by Tatsu in his prime.

The animated adaptation of Kousuke Oono’s wildly popular comedy manga rolls back into Netflix – replete with its signature ‘Powerpoint presentation’-style of animation – in January 2023.

Lookism

While Solo Leveling may have failed to show at Aniplex Online Fest 2022, fellow manwha Lookism excited the world with its anime announcement.

Created by Tae-Jun Park, the action-drama manwha follows the exploits of Park Yung Seok, a nerdy and regularly bullied young man, who after experiencing a supernatural phenomenon wakes up to find himself in a new, flawless body while his original plump vessel remains sleeping beside him.

His switch between ‘bodies’ occurring whenever one falls asleep, during the day he experiences his dream life as the handsome Daniel Park, only to come crashing back down to his harsh reality at night.

Produced by Studio Mir (DOTA: Dragon’s Blood, The Witcher : Nightmare of the Wolf) and featuring a soundtrack contributions – including the series’ theme song – from South Korean KPOP boy band ATEEZ, Lookism premieres on Netflix on November 4th.

Onimusha

Following in the footsteps of such series as Arcane and Castlevania, the next beloved video game franchise to receive an anime adaptation from Netflix was revealed as Capcom’s long-dormant supernatural fantasy series, Onimusha.

According to Netflix, the series’ production team at studio Sublimation will be led by Blade of the Immortal and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure chief director Takashi Miike.

Further, it will utilize a mix of 3D-CGI characters, hand-drawn backgrounds, and modern animation techniques to bring the series’ yokai-infested version of Japan’s Sengoku period to the small screen.

In staying true to the series’ historical influences, main protagonist and legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi will have his character modeled after Toshiro Mifune, a late Japanese screen icon best known for starring in such cinema classics as  Rashomon, The Seven Samurai, and Yojimbo.
