DC Studio Head James Gunn Seems To Tease Lobo Coming To DCU, Jason Momoa Weighs In

The foul-mouthed intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo may be headed to the DCU, maybe. Granted, studio creative head James Gunn sharing an image of The Main Man doesn’t make it so, but that’s the speculation after he did exactly that.

On the burgeoning social media platform Mastodon, where some in Hollywood have tried to make a home since Elon Musk bought Twitter, Gunn posted a photo of the trigger-happy space biker holding a lit cigar and his signature hook, standing atop a mound of skulls.

“Glad to be here,” says the caption of the post that’s driving the Internet into a frenzy, as you can see in a screen grab below.

Gunn could just be greeting everyone on Mastodon since it’s a new account or he could be recognizing his first week on the job as co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios, positions he shares with DC movie producer Peter Safran.

However, everyone is hoping he and Safran have plans for the Last Czarnian who has crossed paths and traded blows with Superman several times. But that’s not all. Someone else who is already a significant part of the DCU could get pulled into this mystery too.

Aquaman actor Jason Momoa bears a striking resemblance to the most familiar depictions of Lobo and it has people talking about what a good fit he is for the role. As our faithful readers know, even we think so.

This fantasy casting is getting enough traction to be brought to Momoa’s attention after he’s already mentioned his “dreams” coming true under Gunn and Safran. ComicBook.com asked him about the idea and he had an interesting response.

“Well, everyone knows I’m a comic book fan. The comic I collected the most, and I have every comic there is,” he said, “you can do your research and find out what it is.”

Momoa is an avowed fan of Lobo and starring in a solo movie as the Master of Frag is considered a dream project for him. According to an interview with The New York Times, he thought that’s who Zack Snyder wanted the actor to play when he was called in to audition for Batman v Superman.

“So he called me into the office, and he’s like, ‘Do you know who I want you to play?’ And I’m like, ‘Lobo.’ A long-haired, cigar-smoking, motorcycle-riding alien bounty hunter from the DC Comics universe,” Momoa said in 2021.

“He’s like, ‘No, not Lobo.’ And I’m like, ‘That’s the only person who can take on Batman, Superman,’” the actor continued. “He said: ‘The good news is you’re Aquaman. The bad news is no one is going to know for the next three to four years.’”

Jason Momoa has been playing Aquaman longer than that and will continue to as next up for him are The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

He could conceivably add more films and another DC role to his schedule. It’d be complicated but as Ryan Reynolds and Gemma Chan have shown us, it can be done.
