In case the appeal of a second outing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most boringly-over-powered character wasn’t enough to draw one into the theater, a new rumor suggests that the upcoming The Marvels will see Carol Danvers married to an alien prince whose planet communicates strictly through song.

Word regarding this detail was first leveled following Disney’s 2022 Content Showcase, a live event hosted in Singapore wherein the company previewed their Asia-Pacific content offerings for the coming year, whereat it was announced that Korean actor Park Seo-Joon (Parasite) would be joining the cast of the Captain Marvel sequel.

At the time, outside of the fact that he would appear in the film, Disney provided no further details regarding just which of Marvel’s many characters he would be portraying.

However, according to a new report from noted scooper Daniel Ritchman, it seems Seo-Joon may be portraying Danvers’ aforementioned beau.

“Park Seo-Joon is reportedly playing Carol Danvers’ husband in ‘THE MARVELS’” posted Ritchman to his Patreon account, as later relayed to the public by Disney news-centric Twitter account @cosmic_marvel. “He’s playing a character called Prince Yan, a leader of a musical planet where everyone has to sing to communicate.”

Created by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist David López, Prince Yan made his Marvel Comics debut in Captain Marvel Vol. 8 #9.

A member of the royal family of Aladna, whose people speak in rhyme rather than outright song, Yan is originally introduced as the fiancée to mutant rock star Lila Cheyney.

Meeting the Prince during one of her mutant-power-fueled, random-location teleportation trips through the universe, Lila agrees to marry him, although upon returning home forgets about the entire arrangment after her parents dismiss her actual interstellar travels as nothing more than the result of “a poet’s imagination”.

However, she is quickly reminded of promise when, upon taking a vacation to her personal Dyson-Sphere-modeled pleasure planet (as introduced in The New Mutants Annual Vol. 1 #1), she finds Prince Yan and the Royals of Aladna waiting to greet her.

Much to her dismay, the Aladna King and Queen are ready for their son to succeed them, but as per their peoples traditions, he cannot do so without a wife.

Looking for a way out of her predicament, Lila reaches out to Carol, who in turn attempts her best to solve the situation diplomatically.

But upon speaking with Yan herself, Carol soon discovers that not only is he being forced to hold Lila to her childhood promise by his parents in order to fulfill their desire for an alliance with the Avengers, but that the Earthling the Prince actually has eyes for is her.

Declining his affections, Carol instead teams up with Yan to convince his parents to allow for a one-time break in tradition and let him ascend to the throne without forcing Lila into a marriage she doesn’t want to be a part of.

Eventually, one royal court brawl and an agreement by Carol’s sidekick Tic to marry Prince Yan in Lila’s stead later, the Earth heroes are freed and allowed to go their separate ways.

As of writing, this single story remains the one and only appearance of Prince Yan in any Marvel media.

In light of these apparent plans to both cast a Korean actor as the alien prince and wap the Aladnan’s rhyming for outright singing, it seems The Marvels may be attempting to appeal to its younger target demographic by tapping into KPOP culture.

Of course, given Marvel’s record of misses when it comes to trying to appeal to extremely current pop culture trends – Shuri’s reference to the “What are those?!” meme in Black Panther and the Hulk’s attempt at using “bruh” in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law quickly leap to mind – its unlikely that such a shallow attempt at getting their stans to make social media GIF set will be anything but extremely embarassing for everyone involved.
