Margot Robbie Claims She Has Spent Years Pushing For A Harley Quinn-Poison Ivy Romance In the DCU: “I Want It Too”

Margot Robbie plays Nellie LaRoy in Babylon from Paramount Pictures.

Margot Robbie’s status as Harley Quinn after three turns beginning in 2016’s Suicide Squad and ending with back-to-back appearances in 2020’s Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad the following year appears to be up in the air. However, she knows where she would like to go with the character if the opportunity arises and it has to do with romance, though not with The Joker.

The formula for the pair’s tempestuous relationship was always bitter, chaotic splits followed by an ill-advised reconciliation. DC has ridden that wave for years albeit in animation more than anywhere else and we have yet to see the latter part of that equation play out in DC’s cinematic universe for a few reasons. And only one factors in good ol’ Mr. J.

At the beginning of Birds Of Prey, Harley is thrown out by her Puddin’ who was played by a body double with Suicide Squad’s Jared Leto in absentia. The movie played out from there and neither Joker nor Leto would be seen again. If you’re still waiting, you might be disappointed with James Gunn in charge of DC Studios.

The co-chairman has recorded issues with Leto so the chances of him working with DC again are very slim. That, however, is not ultimately why Joker and Harley are not getting back together on film anytime soon. The real reason is writers, producers, and especially Robbie herself are hooked on the dynamic of the moment: the relationship between Harley and Poison Ivy.

For years, we’ve seen the two partners in crime shacking up intimately in comics and the adult animated Harley Quinn series on HBO Max. Their torrid affair was a central subplot of the show and rumors flew ever since it would make it into the live-action arena. Moreover, Robbie’s desires could mean there is a grain of truth to the speculation.

“I have been pushing for that for years. I cannot tell you how hard I’ve been pushing for that. I want it too,” she said in an interview with ComicBook.com promoting her upcoming movie Babylon. Obviously, Ivy hasn’t been cast in the DCU at all so the goal is a long way off if the character is a priority.

Compounding things for those who have any interest is Robbie has no idea who could play Ivy – not that it’s her job though having a say wouldn’t be unexpected. “Honestly, when I pictured, I always picture, like, Poison Ivy in the comics. I don’t really actually picture an actress doing it, but I agree, that would be so good,” she added.

With Robbie taking a backseat to Lady Gaga embodying an alternate Harley at Arkham in Joker: Folie a Deux and James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for DC known only to them, it might be a while before the actress gets to follow her lead performance in The Suicide Squad, let alone pal around with Poison Ivy. Being on Gunn’s good side could help.
