DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn Addresses Report Claiming Robert Pattinson’s Batman Will Be Brought Into Shared DCU

The big selling point of making Batman movies and TV for Matt Reeves was setting his continuity aside in his own world and doing his own thing. Despite rumors Robert Pattinson would jump into the DCEU — now officially rebranded as DCU — that condition has remained and new Co-Head of DC Studios James Gunn had to remind people things with Reeves and Pattinson are staying the way they are.

The Suicide Squad director had to clear the air and answer a report from Variety that conveyed to readers the opposite notion. The trade said that “a well-placed source says both Gunn and DC Studios Co-Head Peter Safran are exploring the possibility of incorporating filmmaker Matt Reeves’ iteration of Batman with actor Robert Pattinson into their wider universe.” This unsurprisingly turns out to be untrue.

Gunn, in his response on Twitter, had good things to say about the piece’s author Adam B. Vary but wrote that Vary needs new sources because they are wrong. “There are few reporters I love more than @adambvary – truly a good guy – but in this case, he needs to get a new source as this is entirely untrue,” Gunn tweeted.

His post was liked by Matt Reeves who is working on spinoffs to The Batman – one about The Penguin and the other set in Arkham. We don’t know much about the latter except that it is filling the void left behind once the Gotham PD series was scrapped. Info on Penguin’s show on the contrary is picking up the pace with cast and story details.

This is ahead of a sequel that is virtually guaranteed and the contained nature of Reeves’ canon is to remain intact unlike what Variety and old rumors would have you believe. According to those, Pattinson would find his way into the DCU’s Prime Earth and join the Justice League after it had been rebooted by J.J. Abrams who’d handle that, and Superman.

Considering that would entail roles being recast, which was predicted years ago, we are seeing the beginnings of a full reboot under Gunn and Safran. Aside from the film production wing being rebranded, fans are saying emotional goodbyes to Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck. Likewise, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, and the rest of the Snyderverse are probably next.

Wonder Woman 3 is no longer happening and Gal Gadot tweeted a thank you and a seeming farewell after eight years. Reshoots are making sure Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash won’t be the films they started out as. They interfere with Gunn’s ten-year plan, to begin with, so 2023 is looking like the last hurrah for all involved.
