Rumor: Return of ‘Suicide Squad‘ Director David Ayer And Release of The “Ayer Cut” A Real Possibility at DC Studios

Director and DC Studios co-runner James Gunn could be working to rectify a situation that’s been a blight on the brand’s image since the early days of Zack Snyder’s DCEU and mend fences between Warner Bros. and jilted filmmaker David Ayer. The 2016 Suicide Squad director might return to make a new movie under the updated regime but there’s more.

Based on rumors that scooper Syl Abdul hears through the social-media grapevine, The Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad has a chance of finally seeing the light of day. Ayer and Gunn are on good terms, according to the former, and may be discussing working together. If that comes to pass, Gunn might sweeten the deal by releasing the aforementioned Cut out of respect.

A substantial hint there’s some accuracy to the rumor is what Ayer tweeted in late November about it all. “[Gunn] He’s always been a good guy. Has been incredibly respectful to me. As far as my cut – Of course I want it seen. And I believe there’s a real shot at it. It just won’t be tomorrow,” Ayer said.

The very Twitter-active Gunn seconded the appraisal of his friendship with Ayer, adding they talk in person. “I’ll 2nd what David said about him, both inside & outside of Twitter (yes, we communicate outside of Twitter – believe it or not, our DNA does not begin with an @),” he said. Despite not acknowledging the Ayer Cut that time, Gunn has before; he’s very aware of it.

And, if we follow what Ayer said specifically, as Abdul says he does, there appears to be real potential that the Ayer Cut could be released someday. Ayer’s confidence could mean there are or have been discussions conducted in private as well. Although nothing legally binding has to come out of such conversations, they can bolster the desire seen on social media.

The “#ReleaseTheAyerCut campaign” arose in the wake of the hoopla and success of the same movement that championed The Snyder Cut of Justice League and Zack Snyder’s dark vision for DC. Even if it was a synthetic movement, the mission was accomplished with the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max. Hope for the former cause remains high as a result.

But again, for the above to materialize, Ayer has to get his foot back in the door on the Warner lot first. This is where the rumor from TwoFace – TF that Ayer will direct a DCU movie comes in as, according to Abdul, Gunn wants to assemble action-oriented talent to help him relaunch the universe, and other than Ayer, James Mangold’s name came up.

The caveat is that all this information should be treated as rumors until something extra from more sources or something official from the studio is brought forth. Abdul, however, is optimistic there is tenable “heat” to go along with the talk of Ayer and his Suicide Squad being seen in all its purported and stymied glory.
