Carl Weathers Explains Greef Karga’s Outlandish Clothes In ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Trailer

Actor Carl Weathers recently explained why Greef Karga is seen wearing rather outlandish clothes in The Mandalorian Season 3 compared to the character’s previous appearances in the first two seasons.

Weathers recently spoke with Best of New Orleans, where he was questioned about the upcoming third season of The Mandalorian.
At first, Weathers side-stepped the question saying, “I can say this: I’m going to be in it.”
He went on to add, “I can say I directed an episode of it. I can say it’s going to be slammin’, it’s going to look bigger than the other seasons did. And if you’re not entertained, we’re coming after you.”

When pressed to provide more details, Weathers revealed why his clothes are so outlandish in the third season, “There are aspects of Greef’s character that you’ll see in third season that you didn’t see in the other two seasons. And he — I’ll just say this — he’s become a magistrate. So his clothing is really kind of out there now.”
He added, “It’s got all his finery on and beautiful colors and wearing crazy stuff and trying to keep Nevarro a safe place and place that you might want to call home.”

Karga’s character was revealed to be a disgraced magistrate at the end of the first season when Moff Gideon had seemingly cornered Din Djarin, Cara Dune, Grogu, and Karga.
Gideon states, “I advise disgraced Magistrate Greef Karga to search the wisdom of his years and urge you to lay down your arms and come outside.”

However, throughout the entirety of the first season he was an agent of the Bounty Hunters’ Guild to which Djarin belonged. Karga would eventually play antagonist to Din Djarin after Djarin had a change of heart and decided to rescue Grogu after he turned him over to Imperials operating out of Nevarro.
Karga would eventually seek Djarin’s aid after the Imperials took over Nevarro, and offer him a position back in the Bounty Hunters’ Guild after he assisted him in defeating Moff Gideon and the Imperials.

By Season 2, Karga informs Din Djarin when he arrives on Nevarro that he’s been “steeped in clerical work.” It’s also revealed he’d already taken on the role of Magistrate when Mythrol refers to him as “Magistrate Karga” and details that he “was generous enough to let me work off my debt.”

Given that Greef Karga was already being referred to as a magistrate by Season 2, Weathers’ explanation for the outlandish clothes doesn’t really make sense. However, it’s possible the outlandish clothes are a way to show how prosperous Nevarro has become after Din Djarin, Karga, Cara Dune, and Mythrol drove off the remnants of Moff Gideon’s forces from the planet.
If you recall in Season 2 Episode 4 “The Siege,” there’s a whole scene with Djarin discussing how much more prosperous Nevarro is compared to when he left the planet. On top of that Karga tells Djarin about an Imperial base he wants him to clean out, “There’s a lot of heavy weaponry in that place the black market would love to dismantle and get their hands on.”
When questioned by Djarin about his motive for wanting to take out the Imperial base, Karga replied, “Mando, I just want them off my planet. If we could take out that one last base, Nevarro would be completely safe. We could be a trade anchor for the entire sector.”

The official synopsis for The Mandalorian Season 3 reads, “The journeys of the Mandalorian through the Star Wars galaxy continue. Once a lone bounty hunter, Din Djarin has reunited with Grogu. Meanwhile, the New Republic struggles to lead the galaxy away from its dark history. The Mandalorian will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together.”
The third season airs on Disney+ on March 1, 2023.
