Fox Gives Greenlight To Female-Led, Modern “Reimagining” Of ‘Starsky & Hutch’

The latest victim of Hollywood’s continuing spiral into lazy unoriginality, the classic buddy-cop TV series Starsky & Hutch is the next classic IP set to receive the ‘modern reimagining’ treatment.

First announced by The Hollywood Reporter in a February 16th exclusive, the revival of the 1970s detective duo is currently in development from Sam Sklaver and Elizabeth Peterson, best known respectively for serving as the showrunner and a co-executive producer for Fox’s Prodigal Son.
According to Fox Entertainment president Michale Thorn, the two are expected to deliver at least two prospective scripts, at which time the studio will make a final decision on whether or not to order the reboot to series.

Per a recap of the series provided by Fox and The Hollywood Reporter, “The modern ‘reimagining’ of Starsky & Hutch will center on two female detectives, Sasha Starsky and Nicole Hutchinson. They solve crimes in the offbeat town of Desert City while staying true to their friendship, their awesomeness, and somehow also trying to unravel the mystery behind who sent their fathers to prison 15 years ago for a crime they didn’t commit.”

As of writing, neither Fox nor co-production studio Sony Pictures Television – whose Columbia Pictures TV produced the original 1970s outing – have given any hints as to which actresses, if any, are currently on their radars for the lead roles.
Further, it’s unknown if Sasha and Nicole are either full on gender-swaps of original protagonists David and Kenneth or are somehow related to them by blood, nor if the women will navigate Desert City from behind the wheel of the duo’s classic Gran Torino.

Notably, should the series ever come to full fruition, it will be the second such time the detective duo will have been revived following the conclusion of their four year run on ABC.
As many may remember, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson stepped into the shoes of Starsky & Hutch, respectively, and walked the duo onto the silver screen in 2004.
