According to The-Numbers, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania grossed $32.2 million in its second weekend beating out Cocaine Bear, which grossed $23 million and Jesus Revolution, which brought in $15.5 million.

In its first weekend at the box office, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania brought in $106.1 million at the domestic box office. The drop to $32.2 million is a staggering 70%. It’s the worst second week drop in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Thor: Love and Thunder had a 68% decline. It went from $144.1 million to $46.6 million. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness declined 67% from $187.4 million to $61.7 million.

In contrast, Top Gun: Maverick only had a 29% decline. It went from $126.7 million to $90 million. Avatar: The Way of Water only had a 53% decline. It went from $134.1 million to $63.3 million.

Box office tracker and critic OMB Reviews comments on the box office numbers and its tracking saying, “Things are just not looking very good for this franchise and also not looking good for the MCU going forward because $500 million is what I have as its break-even point. Some people have $600 million at its break-even point.”

“If this film is barely going to get to $500 million or cross $500 million and get maybe $11 million in profit, which would be kind of the lowest end of the range that I have for this movie as far as profits are concerned that is abysmal,” he opined.

He elaborated, “It’s still making your money back and it’s still making a ‘little bit of profit,’ but ultimately when everything comes down to it, it is definitely not worth, again especially compared to the $200 million investment you put into the film to only get $11 million back.”

Later in his analysis comparing Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to Ant-Man and the Quantumania, OMB Reviews states, “You’re still seeing a much, much smaller opening weekend in Ant-Man, as it is a smaller IP than those other two, but still seeing the same amount of drop off. And so what that’s saying is that the MCU stans are still out there and they are still supporting the MCU, but their numbers are growing a lot smaller and they are not going to see these movies on more than occasion.”

“And let’s just be fair, even if you genuinely liked a film like Doctor Strange 2 or Thor 4 or any of these other films you probably still would say, ‘Yeah, but you know what I don’t think I’d ever want to rewatch it again or I only saw it one time in theaters.’ Whereas, again, before if you were talking about the original Avengers film, that’s a film that people saw many, many times and the box office numbers and ticket sales clearly showed that amount,” he detailed.

“So 70% drop is as bad as it looks,” he asserted.

He later predicts that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will actually perform worse than Ant-Man and the Wasp without even factoring in inflation.

OMB Reviews explains, “Ant-Man and the Wasp ended at $218 million domestic. So, though that is technically still on the table for Quantumania, it’s looking a lot less likely as things go on. It is definitely not going to get anywhere near the $409 million internationally that Ant-Man and the Wasp made though.”

“So that’s why we can think that this film will have no chance of catching up to Ant-Man and the Wasp,” he said.

He also think it will be difficult for the film to top the original Ant-Man film. “That original Ant-Man made $564 million. And look at the international versus the domestic. It’s a lot easier for Quantumania to be able to catch up and beat the original domestic even adjusted for inflation number for the original Ant-Man, but there is no way for it to catch up to the international number.

“And so based off of that alone, it’s looking like this is probably going to be, if I had to guess, below $550 million worldwide when all is said and done.”

Box office tracking website Box Office Pro originally predicted the film would gross anywhere between $249 and $347 million domestically for its entire theatrical run.

If OMB Reviews’ predictions based off the current box office projections comes true, it’s likely it won’t even hit the low end of that original prediction from Box Office Pro.
