Michael Keaton is not the only DC character actor and star of this summer’s The Flash who doesn’t understand the rules of the Multiverse. He’s not the only Michael for that matter either as Michael Shannon, also returning to play his best-known character, doesn’t entirely get how Zod survives his fatal neck injury at the end of Man of Steel.

“I said, ‘As memory serves me, I think I died in Man of Steel. Are they sure they got the right guy?’” said a confused Shannon in Looper interview. “But then they explained to me the whole multiverse phenomenon, which…I was a little behind the times on that.” He was, however, intrigued about revisiting Man of Steel’s continuity.

“I loved making Man of Steel, and I love working with [director] Zack [Snyder], and I felt like it was actually, in a way, a fairly important film,” he continued. “It was nice to revisit the character. I wasn’t there for a terribly long time.” Shannon’s scenes didn’t take long due to his place in The Flash not being very large.

“I was in and out in a couple of weeks, so it was a nice way to spend a bit of my summer in England,” he explained. “Andy’s [Muschietti] a lovely guy and a great artist, visually, and I had a blast. I tried to get back into his skin. He’s a little different in this film.”

Shannon teased more about The Flash’s version of Zod and the size of the role, adding, “You don’t spend as much time with him, so you don’t really get to know as much about what he’s thinking. It’s not necessarily his movie. That’s the thing with these multiverse movies — you get a little bit of this and a little bit of that.”

Despite his oversized presence in The Flash trailer evoking Man of Steel’s world-ending stakes, Zod’s extended cameo amounts to him fighting Barry Allen and his allies in the climax, according to spoilers. They include Michael Keaton’s Batman and a new version of Supergirl portrayed by Sasha Calle who stands in for Henry Cavill’s beloved portrayal of Kara Zor-El’s more famous cousin.
