Zack Snyder confessed in a startling revelation he wanted his DCEU to connect a little too neatly. During his SnyderCon appearance, he revealed that what he had in mind for Wonder Woman’s origin was vastly different from what we got and what has been seen before. What’s more, this unprecedented retcon would’ve mingled her ancestry with Superman’s.

Whereas it had been established that Diana Prince was molded from clay and brought to life in previous continuities, in the DCEU, that aspect of her origin was a ruse that deflected suspicion away from her true heritage as the daughter of Zeus and the God Killer. That was the size of Gal Gadot’s material in Wonder Woman and Justice League.

Snyder, however, discussed going deeper and making Zeus and the gods of Olympus, and therefore Diana, Kryptonians. “It’s this whole thing with Ares and Zeus…” he began via The Direct. “[We considered how] Zeus could possibly be a Kryptonian. So, that Wonder Woman’s powers…you can sort of see where that’s going. Because the whole thing of whether or not magic or gods…”

Snyder continued, “There’s a version of where you’re like, ‘That’s cool, I guess.’ But then there’s also…the scientific aspect. You have the pathology built up of like, ‘Where do gods come from? What is that about?’ We had played around with that quite a bit.” They played with these ideas, but they didn’t get far, obviously.

That said, the rejected origin story would have explained some plot holes in Man of Steel that remain unresolved. One of those is an explanation for how a Kryptonian scout ship wound up buried in the icy polar tundra. The Snyderverse’s VFX supervisor John DesJardin put forward “Ares was the one who caused” that and “killed his crew.”

Ares experienced a fall from grace somehow but the theory of humble Kryptonian beginnings that imply alien future tech saps Wonder Woman’s story of its distinguishing magical fantasy elements.

Accounting for that, fans aren’t warming to these proposed changes, and don’t see them as endearing to the cause of keeping the Snyderverse going as an Elseworlds continuum on Netflix.
