Disney Promises More Star Wars and Marvel Films
Disney chairman Bob Iger talked with the BBC’s Newsbeat about the upcoming slate of Star Wars films as well as the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Iger noted, “There are five Star Wars films – four more with Episode VII: The Force Awakens – that are in varying stages of development and production.” Those four movies include Rogue One, Star Wars Episode VIII, a Han Solo anthology, and Star Wars Episode IX. He continued, “There will be more after that, I don’t know how many, I don’t know how often.”
Iger also talked about the Marvel Cinematic Universe which has already spawned a number of films including three Iron Man movies, two Thor movies, two Captain America movies, two Avengers movies, Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Incredible Hulk. He noted, “Marvel, you’re dealing with thousands and thousand of characters – that will go on forever.”
There are currently two films lined up for a release this year. Captain America: Civil War debuts in the UK on April 29, 2016 and here in the states on May 6th. The second movie, Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch will hit theaters this fall on November 4, 2016. They have also announced at least eight other movies scheduled out to July 12, 2019 with a ninth movie featuring Spider-Man in a collaboration with Sony.
Due to the sheer number of Marvel related movies and other media being produced, BBC Newsbeat asked about the potential of waning interest. Iger responded with a resounding, “No, I don’t think they’re getting weary.” He did go on to note, “But I think we keep raising the bar in terms of telling stories that bring them back, that excite them, that make it feel new and that is what we do for a living.”
