Report: Mortal Kombat Animated Film in the Works at Warner Bros.

A new report reveals that Warner Bros. Animation is hard at work on a brand new Mortal Kombat animated film.

The report from Revenge of the Fans  reveals a cast list for the film which includes Community’s Joel McHale and Dexter’s Jennifer Carpenter.

If the report is true and Carpenter and McHale are already on board, Warner Bros. will continue its tradition of casting top-notch voice talents.

Carpenter is no stranger to the extreme violence exhibited in the Mortal Kombat universe. Her roles in [easyazon_link identifier=”B01329A15E” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Dexter[/easyazon_link] as well as the Exorcism of Emily Rose, a personal favorite of mine, make her well-suited for the dark fantasy world of Mortal Kombat.

Carpenter is also no stranger to Warner Bros. She recently gave voice to Selina Kyle in their animated adaptation of [easyazon_link identifier=”B077H8N7Q8″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Batman by Gaslight[/easyazon_link].

It’s more than likely Carpenter will give voice to Sonya Blade.

Next up is Joel McHale. Fans of Community and The Soup know who he is. It’s likely that he will voice John Claude Van Damme doppelganger, Johnny Cage.

The rest of the cast allegedly includes:

  • Robin Atkin Downes – Netflix’s Disenchantment & Voltron
  • Grey Griffin – Avengers Assembled & Young Justice
  • Ike Amadi – Trollhunters & Avengers Assembled
  • Fred Tatasciore – Voltron & Avengers Assembled
  • Darin DePaul – Justice League Action & Spider-Man PS4 2018
  • Jordan Rodrigues
  • Steve Blum
  • Kevin Michael Richardson
  • Patrick Seitz

Mortal Kombat fans might recognize some of these names. Steve Blum voied Sub-Zero in the video game’s reboot, Kevin Michael Richardson gave voice to Goro in the 1995 film, and Patrick Seitz has done voice work for Scoprion for all of the new Mortal Kombat games.

Warner Bros. seems to have renewed interest in the Mortal Kombat franchise after the release of Mortal Kombat X in 2015 which won Best Fighting Game.

Warner Bros. acquired Mortal Kombat in 2009 after Midway went bankrupt. They rolled the production team in NetherRealm Studios which produced the most recent console version.

Not only was the console game spun into a popular mobile game, but reports indicated that Aquaman director James Wan would be producing an upcoming live-action film featuring a number of popular characters from the franchise including Sonya Blade and Raiden.

However, James Wan recently cast doubt on whether the live-action film would see the light of day speaking to Heroic Hollywood:

“That has been such a tricky one just trying to get the script to a point. People don’t know this, fans don’t understand this, but there’s just so much on the business side of things… to try and get the right budget for it, and we want to make sure we have enough resources and the budget to do the film right. If I can’t get the right resources and find the right filmmaker for it, I don’t want to do it, and I’m so busy already. I don’t need to clutter my plate with more stuff if I don’t believe it can be done right.”

Wan’s comments don’t appear to stop Warner Bros. from delving into the Mortal Kombat universe with this rumored animated film.
