Rumor: Angelina Jolie to Join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Eternals

Angelina Jolie is rumored to be in talks to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in their upcoming The Eternals movie.
The rumor comes from The Hollywood Reporter, where they report, “Jolie has chosen the Marvel project based on the Jack Kirby-created title about superpowered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and a more monstrous offshoot known as the Deviants that were created by the cosmic beings called Celestials.”
Not only does The Hollywood Reporter reveal Jolie is in talks for The Eternals, but they also indicated that the film will involve a love story between Ikaris and Sersi.
Ikaris first appeared in Eternals #1 in 1976. The character was created by Jack Kirby and would be the main protagonist in Kirby’s original Eternals series. He would diligently work to protect humanity against the monstrous Deviants. During his time in Greece fighting a Minotaur-shaped Deviant, Ikaris married a human and they had a son Icarus. He would maintain his duties and serve as a protector of humanity against the Deviants.
While Ikaris served as a protector of humanity, Sersi would actually live and interact among humans. In fact, she would join the Avengers at the behest of Captain America and would even get involved in the Kree-Shi’ar War when she and a number of other Avengers attempted to murder the Kree Leader, the Supreme Intelligence.
It’s unclear what role Jolie could take in The Eternals, but it’s safe to say she could play Sersi, Thena, Cybele, or even Elysius.
If Jolie lands the role, it won’t be her first foray into comic book films. She previously appeared in the 2007 adaptation of Mark Millar’s [easyazon_link identifier=”B001MNFOIW” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Wanted[/easyazon_link] alongside James McAvoy.
Jolie will next appear on the big screen when she reprises her role as Maleficent in Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. It will hit theaters on October 18, 2019.
The Eternals will be directed by Chloe Zhao and there are rumors that Disney was seeking an openly gay actor to play one of the lead roles in the film. That rumor would be met with a petition demanding Disney and Marvel Studios drop the idea of an LGBT lead actor and superhero.
