Marvel Comics and writer Kelly Thompson will set Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel on a new mission to “kill the Avengers.”

The new story arc for Thompson and artist Lee Garbett’s Captain Marvel titled “The Last Avenger” will begin in Captain Marvel #12.

Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski spoke to CBR about the new story arc, “As Kelly continues her daring and defining run on Captain Marvel, in this new arc, ‘The Last Avenger,’ she pushes the boundaries even further by taking Carol in a dark… and deadly… new direction.” He adds, “And we’re thrilled that acclaimed artist Lee Garbett has come onboard to bring his spectacular storytelling skills to the series most action-packed adventure yet!”

Thompson added her own thoughts on Twitter writing, “While I know this is gonna scare a lot of you, I hope you can trust me that we’re telling an incredible Captain Marvel story and – I think – a story unlike we’ve ever seen before in Carol’s book.”

The solicitation text for the new story arc confirms Captain Marvel’s new mission will be to kill the Avengers.

“Captain Marvel has fought off alien hordes. Rescued X-Men. Punched Thanos in the face. Literally saved the world. She now faces her greatest challenge: kill the Avengers. Has one of the world’s most powerful heroes gone dark? But why? And what does this mean for Carol… for the world? Life on Earth will never be the same. Kelly Thompson teams up with Eisner-nominated artist Lee Garbett for a brand-new arc — and a bold new direction!”

The issue will feature covers by Mark Brooks and Lee Garbett. Brooks promises there are multiple versions of his cover.

The latest issue of Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel #8 shipped only 32,939 units in July according to industry tracker Comichron.
