Cobra Kai’s Tanner Buchanan, who is lobbying to play Robin in the new phase of Batman movies alongside Robert Pattinson, is positive about the direction the third Boy Wonder is taking in Batman: Urban Legends and is prepared if they try out this experimental neo-canon in the movies.

Speaking to Variety on the Just For Variety podcast, Buchanan says he’d be willing to play Robin – without specifying which one – and probably any hero who is made bisexual or queer.

“If I have the opportunity to represent something like that, that’s incredible,” Buchanan said. “If they’re willing to write it, then you know what? Of course, I’m going to play it.”

An Ohio native, he comes from the Midwest and most likely had a suburban upbringing, which he describes as more conservative, but Buchanan is fine with leaving those values behind for the differing worldview of Hollywood.

“Growing up, people aren’t exposed to the world and I was lucky enough to have come out to LA where it’s a completely different world than [the] Midwest,” the actor said. “And my eyes were open to that from a very young age that I was like, ‘Yeah, that makes sense.’”

He’s talking again in vague generalities but Buchanan has shown producers and casting agents his willingness to play LGBT characters in the past with appearances on the TNT drama Major Crimes and the Freeform teen soap opera The Fosters.

Cobra Kai even got into the act in season 2 but only briefly when they gave a supporting female character a girlfriend out of the blue at a party scene. It didn’t impact the story much and had nothing to do with Buchanan – who plays the son of Danny LaRusso’s main antagonist from The Karate Kid movies, Johnny Lawrence.

Robin is Buchanan’s avowed favorite character though he may skip the sidekick phase and play the rebellious vengeful loner in Red Hood if the rumor of a solo film unrelated to Titans is true.

Buchanan’s latest film, a gender-flipped remake of She’s All That, is now streaming on Netflix.
