Sam Humphries, writer of Image Comics’ Citizen Jack, as well as various Marvel and Boom! Studios titles, helms Green Lanterns #2, after co-writing issue #1 with Geoff Johns. Issue #2 essentially picks up where issue #1 left off by continuing to introduce the two new Green Lanterns to the reader through backstories and character building.

Green Lanterns #2 focuses mostly on Green Lantern rookie Jessica Cruz – her battle with anxiety and self-doubt, as well as her relationship with her sister – while progressing the Rage Planet storyline, which involves the Red Lanterns’ attempt to transform Earth into the birthplace of Red Dawn by planting the Rage Seed at it’s core.

Green Lanterns #2

While the dialogue between Jessica and her sister sometimes seems a little too sentimental and sappy, for the most part, I found the writing to be entertaining and quickly paced. The story advances quickly as Jessica initially seems over matched by Rage infected victims. However, an appearance by her brash, overconfident partner and fellow Green Lantern rookie Simon Baz provides some much needed assistance. They soon realize that the Rage threat is much more than they expected.

Artist Robson Rocha, who has drawn for various DC Comics titles, and colorist Blond, also a veteran of various DC Comics books, have created some stunning artwork. There are several full-page images that help to convey the sheer power wielded by the Green Lanterns, as well as the size of the universe in which they operate. The panel layout flows naturally. It helps to quicken the pace as the readers’ eyes bounce instinctively from one panel to the next. The characters are beautifully drawn by Rocha. Blond’s colors, especially the ever-present green inherent to a Green Lantern title, really pop off the pages.

The Verdict
