DC Comics Reveals a New Superman?
**Warning Spoilers for Sideways #9 Below**
DC Comics and storytellers Dan DiDio and Max Raynor threw a huge curve ball into the DC Universe in [easyazon_link identifier=”B07H8S72XW” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Sideways #9[/easyazon_link].
Derek James aka Sideways traveled into the Dark Multiverse and was quickly enslaved by the behemoth Perrus the Benelovent who appears to maintain the plane of existence in the Dark Multiverse by tapping into the energy of a number of his other slaves or followers.
They have signed a pact to allow Perrus to drain their energy in order to maintain the realm.
However, this plane of existence holds a number of secrets and all isn’t as it seems. In fact, a Superman appears to have locked himself away in a cocoon. James frees him, but in a twist, Superman indicates he could have easily escaped himself. It’s unclear why he hadn’t done so, or why he is in the cocoon. One thing is for sure is that he claims he’s never getting put away again!
Now the mystery is just who in the world is this Superman? It’s possible he’s just a Superman from a Dark Multiverse. DC Comics and Scott Snyder introduced the idea of the Dark Multiverse in their event series [easyazon_link identifier=”1401277322″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Dark Nights: Metal[/easyazon_link]. The series showcased a number of Dark Nights from the Dark Multiverse that were evil incarnations of Batman. However, it’s possible not all of the realms in the Dark Multiverse contained evil versions of the superheroes. It’s possible this is just another version of Superman like Kal-L from Earth-2.
What is interesting about this Superman, is the design is very similar to what we saw in the very beginning of the New 52. In Action Comics #1 written by Grant Morrison, Superman was much younger, and he also had a shorter cape. He also happened to wear the same outfit as this Superman. You can see his combat boots and the patches on his knees as he rescues this man who falls from a building.
Here’s an even better look:
What makes this new Superman even more interesting is that Grant Morrison is expected to pen the upcoming Sideways Annual #1 with Dan DiDio and Morrison is the man who brought this jeans wearing Superman into existence in Action Comics #1 with Rags Morales.
However, this Superman might not be alive for very long. The official solicitation hints at a “heroic ultimate sacrifice.”
“Sideways unleashes his “super” secret weapon against Perrus in an effort to free the oppressed people and escape to his home dimension. He’ll get some additional help from the newly discovered Seven Soldiers, but only if someone makes a heroic ultimate sacrifice. Plus, a bonus backup story in which Sideways meets the Unseen!!”
Do you think this could be the original Superman from the first issue of Action Comics? Or do you think this is a Superman from one of the Dark Multiverses? What do you think DC Comics has going on?
