Vox Day And Arkhaven Comics Announce Webtoons Alternative, Arktoons
Vox Day and Arkhaven Comics announced a brand new initiative, Arktoons, that will be an alternative and competitor to the wildly popular Webtoons platform.
Arktoons is described as a “digital comics site featuring vertically-displayed comics panels in the Webtoons style that is particularly well-suited for reading on smartphones and tablets.”
A press release details that the platform will feature “the highest-resolution graphics currently available, with standard 1080 horizontal resolution that provides up to 1.9M pixels per comics panel, 82 percent more than the 1,024,000 pixels per panel provided by the industry-standard 800 resolution. 2160 resolution is also supported.”
When the platform launches a week from now on April 28th at Arkhaven.com, it will feature 32 original comics from Arkhaven Comics, Dark Legion Comics, Rislandia, and Superprumo.
Some of the titles include Alt-Hero, Midnight’s War, A Throne Of Bones, Chuck Dixon’s Avalon, Chicago Typewriter, Gun Ghoul, Flying Sparks, Deus Vult, The Awakener, and Hammer of Freedom.
The press release boasts that the site will “release more new comics content in the first month alone than was solicited by DC Comics in May.” In fact, each title will “run weekly episodes.”
Arktoons will be free to view, but will also feature a subscription model. Subscription options range from $5 to $50 per month.
The varying subscription levels give subscribers various rewards that can include “the ability to rate and comment upon the comics to receiving limited edition print omnibus editions, posters, and t-shirts.”
Much like Webtoons, Arktoons will also allow independent creators to present their own comics without publishing through Arkhaven or one of its partners.
However, there are restrictions on the type of content that independent creators will be able to upload. Day explained the standards for Arktoons are “no sex, no satanism, no social justice.”
He further elaborated, “If you prefer comics that feature obese, race-washed, gender-swapped parodies of the superheroes you used to know fighting for diversity, social justice, and the annihilation of Western civilization, stick with Marvel and DC.”
Day believes Arktoons will be a game changer when it comes to comic book distribution. He revealed that the site was originally developed under the name Project Asteroid and explained what he originally thought it meant and how the meaning evolved over time.
Day said, “When we launched Arkhaven, I thought we were like those little mammals that ran around trying not to get stepped on by the dinosaurs, but maybe we had a chance to survive the asteroid strike that will wipe them out. Then as Arktoons began to take shape, I had an epiphany: we are the asteroid.”
Part of that asteroid is the creator of infamous Batman villain Bane, Chuck Dixon. Dixon detailed that “Arktoons is unleashing me. It’s giving me the kind of creative freedom I haven’t had in a long time.”
Arktoons launches on April 28th at Arkhaven.com.
