After Charlie’s Angels, Kristen Stewart’s Underwater FLOPS Hard at Box Office
After Elizabeth Banks and the Kristen Stewart led Charlie’s Angels bombed at the box office, Kristen Stewart’s latest entry Underwater crashed and burned even harder.
Back in November, box office tracking website Box Office Pro predicted the film would have an opening weekend between $5 million and $10 million. They predicted the film would ultimately gross between $12 million and $25 million for its entire domestic box office run.

They lauded Stewart as a draw for the film writing, “Kristen Stewart and T.J. Miller stand out as recognizable presences with appeal to millennial audiences.”
Box Office Pro would stick to their long range prediction made in November, predicting earlier in January the film would make between $5 million and $10 million. They even added that Disney was expecting the film to make around $10 million.
The film would fall neatly into Box Office Pro’s predicted range. The Numbers reports the film made just over $7 million in its opening weekend where it debuted in 2,791 theaters.
While the film fits into the predicted range, it still fell short of Disney’s expected $10 million and it has a very long way to go before it could be considered profitable. The Numbers reports the film had a $65 million production budget.
Odin from Odin’s Movie Blog on the Geeks + Gamers YouTube channel explains why the $7 million opening weekend is not good for Disney.
Odin explains, “Because it cost $65 million to produce it, it meant with marketing they spent $97.5 million on that film Underwater.” Based on earlier projections, Odin noted the film currently has a $91 million loss. Given the updated estimates show the film actually made $2 million less in its opening weekend, the loss is currently at $93 million.
And it looks like the film will be an overall loss for Disney given Box Office Pro’s estimates for the film’s total gross. They predicted on the high end it could make $25 million. The film’s production alone is $65 million.

It doesn’t look like that film will come anywhere close to even breaking even with its production costs.
As Odin notes in the video above, following Charlie’s Angels, there appears to be a trend starting that indicates Stewart is “box office poison.”
