Actress Susan Sarandon discussed the upcoming Blue Beetle movie back in September where she revealed that her character is not only the villain of the film, but she’s specifically representative of the “white military industrial complex.”

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Sarandon discussed the film.

She began saying, “What’s fabulous about [Blue Beetle] is it’s the first Latinx hero that has his own movie. Even better all of the Mexican — because his family is Mexican and all the actors were Mexican and it’s in Spanish so it’s subtitled.”

She then shared details about her character, Victoria Kord, “I’m, of course, the bad guy. I’m the white military industrial complex.”

“So I had a fabulous time because there’s nothing better than being bad,” she added.

It’s possible Sarandon’s character takes inspiration from Jarvis Kord, the uncle of Ted Kord, who was the second Blue Beetle in the comics behind archaeologist Dan Garrett. In Secret Origins Vol. 2 #2 it’s revealed Ted Kord unwittingly aided his uncle in the creation of an android army programmed to do his uncle’s will.

Jarvis Kord planned to use the android army to take control of not just the world, but the universe believing he would obtain absolute power.

The official description for Blue Beetle reads, “Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.

“When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE,” it concludes.

The film stars Xolo Maridueña, Adriana Barraza, Damían Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, George Lopez, Belissa Escobedo, and Harvey Guillén.

It is directed by Angel Manuel Soto based off a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.

Blue Beetle arrives in theaters on August 18, 2023.
