Daniel Dae Kim Confirms Role in Hellboy Will Replace Ed Skrein!
Originally Ed Skrein was slated to play the role of Major Ben Daimio in the Hellboy reboot. But arguments of whitewashing overshadowed the casting of the role and Ed Skrein backed out not long after. In a statement about his departure, Skrein stated:
It is clear that representing this character in a culturally accurate way holds significance for people, and that to neglect this responsibility would continue a worrying tendency to obscure ethnic minority stories and voice in the Arts. I feel it is important to honor and respect that.
For their part, Lionsgate agreed with Ed Skrein and released their own statement:
It was not our intent to be insensitive to issues of authenticity and ethnicity, and we will look to recast the part with an actor more consistent with the character in the source material.
Now, it seems that Lionsgate and Millennium Studios might have their Ben Daimio! Daniel Dae Kim, known for his roles in the Hawaii Five-O reboot and Spider-Man 2, is in the final stages of negotiation to take on the role according to the Hollywood Reporter.
However, Kim took too Twitter to confirm his role in Hellboy.

The role of Major Ben Daimio is an important one. He’s a military member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. He gained powers through a supernatural encounter. It gave him the ability to turn into a jaguar when in great pain or anger.
It’s no surprise that Daniel Dae Kim was eyed for the role. He recently left Hawaii Five-O over the summer along with co-star Grace Park. It opened up his schedule.
Daniel Dae Kim also has the right look. HIs Korean descent makes it easier to fit into a role written about a Japanese person.
