Despite how any other actor with a comparable history of underage misconduct accusations, verifiable assaults, and numerous arrests would have long been dropped from any and all projects they were attached to, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are leaving the door open for Ezra Miller to eventually return to the role of the Flash.

The two Warner Bros. Discovery executives offered their thoughts on Miller and the actor’s ongoing personal troubles on January 31st while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about their plans for DC’s cinematic future.

Following their announcement of numerous new DC projects including the Superman: Legacy and The Brave and the Bold films as well as a Booster Gold television series, Gunn and Safran turned their attentions to the four films – Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom – that were produced and scheduled to release before they stepped in to revamp the DCEU.

Beginning with the declaration that Andy Muschetti’s The Flash was “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made,” Gunn then noted to THR that there was a distinct possibility that each film’s respective lead could reprise their role in his and Safran’s new universe, clarifying that “there is nothing that prohibits that from happening.”

In light of Gunn leaving the door open for Miller to once again don the Scarlet Speedster’s signature red tights, Safran addressed the actor’s current situation, asserting, “Ezra is completely committed to their recovery. We are fully supportive of that journey they are on right now. When the time is right, when they are ready to have that discussion, we will all figure out what the best path forward.”

“But right now, they are completely focused on their recovery,” he said. “And in our conversation with them, in the last couple of months, it feels like they are making enormous progress.”

Interestingly, the pair’s openness towards Miller’s return somewhat contradicts Gunn’s own self-professed philosophy on ‘cancelling’ actors.

Asked by THR for his thoughts on Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi’s recent condemnation of Pfizer, Gunn explained “Actors, filmmakers that I work with are going to say things that I agree with, and things that I don’t agree with. I can’t be changing my plans all the time because an actor says something that I don’t agree with.”

“At the same token, if someone is doing something that is morally reprehensible, that’s a different story, and we have to take that into account,” he concluded, seemingly sidestepping the severity of the underage grooming and child endangerment offenses the actor has been accused of (and has yet to publicly address).

DC’s next theatrical release, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, brings the thunder on March 17th.

Meanwhile, Miller can be seen in his supposed final DCEU appearance when The Flash crosses the finish line three months later on June 16th.
