DC’s Joker Actor Marc Maron Says Marvel and Comic Book Movies are for ‘Male Nerd Childs’
Though actor and comedian Marc Maron is in a gritty comic book movie this fall, Joker, he is not a fan of the genre in general and really looks down on its fan base.
On a recent Conan appearance, he doubled down on the point of view he has expressed in the past when talking about the Todd Phillips thriller in relation to other material. Asked about Avengers: Endgame, for instance, Maron said he won’t see it or anything from Marvel. He said too he’s proud of that because he is a grown-up, unlike moviegoers flocking to Marvel movies.
“I have some issues with them and I generally don’t like them. I don’t wanna be bullied into seeing those movies. I’m a grown-up, I’m not seven, and I think those movies are for grown, male nerd childs.”
The audience reacted negatively to his comment so he followed up with this:
“Oh, really? Take the hit! You guys are in charge of culture.
Now I gotta go travel 15-20 minutes to a smaller movie theater to see a grown-up movie with other grown-ups where we can all sit together and not understand the ending?”
Maron continued, describing the movies and experiences he likes and restating his point:
“That’s part of the experience. Where you walk out and you’re like, ‘I don’t know, did the guy die? It’s not clear. It’s not clear.’ That’s the kind of movie I enjoy. I’m not gonna be bullied by grown, nerd men.”
Conan asked Maron if he meant to come out and alienate people. Maron responded with, “Isn’t that what I do?” He then concluded by mitigating his commentary slightly:
“I just don’t go see them, I’m not interested. Maybe I overdid it a little bit.”
Make ‘Em Laugh
A stand-up comic by trade, Marc Maron was probably doing a bit. His outlook is genuine, just turned up to 11 in the clip. On stage and on other talk shows he usually is abrasive and pushy, poking all and any bears in sight. (Related: DC vs. Marvel War ‘Is On’ Claims Joker Director Todd Phillips)
On GLOW, Maron plays a sleazy film producer and wrestling promoter. He is very much in his character and it shows in the routine on Conan. So, that he normally wouldn’t act in a film based on a comic is surprising considering how immersive they can get. If circumstances were different he might have passed on Joker. But, he couldn’t resist working with Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro. As Maron himself said:
“I’ve been somewhat judgemental (sp) when it comes to comic book movies and I’ve got a little pushback in the press for being a hypocrite. Whatever I think, if you get a call and someone says, ‘Hey do you wanna do a scene with Robert De Niro and Joaquin Phoenix?’ your principles fall to the wayside.”
Maron plays an agent in Joker who books Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) gigs on a late-night talk show hosted by Murray Franklin (De Niro). His Netflix series, GLOW, is in its third season. (Related: Todd Phillips is Open to a Joker Sequel with Joaquin Phoenix)
Joker comes out Oct. 4th.
