Brendan Fraser is moving up the HBO Max ladder and going from a main anti-hero role in Doom Patrol to a main villain role in the Batgirl solo film.

THR reports Fraser has been cast as Firefly, confirming a previous rumor the arsonist and Gotham villain was going to be in the script. Previous reports and rumors held incorrectly the actor was either playing Carmine Falcone or that Bane would make his DCEU debut.

It’s expected that Fraser will play the Garfield Lynns version of the character that made his debut in a 1952 issue of Detective Comics and has been a deadly pyromaniac since he was rebooted post-Crisis on Infinite Earths.

After that, Lynns became a staple among Batman villains appearing in multiple games and animated iterations of the universe. He kind of already showed up in a one-shot tying into Batman v Superman.

In Batgirl, according to an alleged casting call, Lynns is close to 60 and a disgruntled firefighter out for a little payback against Gotham for some reason.

This characterization is close to one seen in the Arrow episode “Burned” from the show’s first season. Committing suicide in defeat, Lynns never appeared in the Arrowverse again after that.

The Firefly character has run afoul of Barbara Gordon and Nightwing, in comics of the past, but during The New 52 under his bug-eyed helmet was an ex-teacher named Ted Carson – the second person to stand in as the villain.

A Lady Firefly was introduced on the Fox TV series Gotham as an enforcer for Penguin and she was later brought into the comics as Carson’s protege.

On Doom Patrol, Fraser plays the human form of Cliff Steele and his voice as the Robotman. A stuntman and longtime friend of his wears the robot suit and copies Fraser’s mannerisms.

Batgirl stars Leslie Grace and is directed by the duo behind Bad Boys For Life, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, with a screenplay by Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson. The movie is set for a premiere on HBO Max in 2022.
