Dwayne Johnson Says Black Adam Being Discussed For “Future DC Multiverse Chapters” James Gunn Claims Elseworld Projects Are “Actively Happening”
Black Adam’s profits may be meager and disputed but we haven’t seen the last of Dwayne Johnson’s Man In Black, after all, according to the star. In a statement, he is saying the future is wide open for the character in the Multiverse, but that would be down the road after James Gunn and Peter Safran wrap up “their first chapter” or phase of DC.
“Black Adam has been buried, but he isn’t (quite) dead,” Variety reports about the antihero and Johnson’s ambitions. “Dwayne Johnson says that after talking with DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, Johnson’s DC anti-hero Black Adam ‘will not be in their first chapter of storytelling.’” This could come as good and surprising news for those who want a sequel or spinoff.
The Rock posted in a statement addressed to his “passionate friends” on his social media accounts that he and Gunn “connected, and Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling. However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.”
His statement continued, “James and I have known each other for years and have always rooted for each other to succeed. It’s no different now, and I will always root for DC (and Marvel) to win and WIN BIG.” Johnson added he has a “very thick skin – and you can always count on me to be direct with my words.”
He took time to celebrate bringing Black Adam to screens after more than a decade of plugging away at that task. “After 15 years of relentless hard work to finally make Black Adam, I’m very proud of the film we delivered for fans worldwide. I will always look back on the fan reaction to Black Adam with tremendous gratitude, humility and love,” he said.

Perhaps channeling the encouraging sentiments and data that said the film would turn a small profit, Johnson declared, “We did great.” Reports by Variety and other sources say otherwise. They note his optimism is premature as “’Black Adam’ will likely lose money.” Other outlets counter further that The Rock’s numbers may have been fake, meaning the reality is the film pretty much flopped.
Johnson was silent on that matter and the film when it landed on HBO Max last weekend. However, he quickly plugged his Teremana tequila and wished “HAPPY HOLIDAYS” to all his fans and supporters who keep the Black Adam and superhero trains going. Gunn will certainly aid in keeping one or the other chugging depending on what he announces next year.
The Man In Black won’t be on the docket obviously but the co-DC Studio head seemingly confirmed what Johnson’s statement said — that there will be room for further incorporation of Kahndaq’s own eventually. Responding to a fan asking if Elseworlds movies were being produced, Gunn answered, “That is actively happening,” in a tweet tagging The Rock too.
Atop the thread, Gunn shared Johnson’s statement and in his quoted tweet he says, “Love [The Rock] & I’m always excited to see what he & Seven Bucks do next. Can’t wait to collaborate soon.” So they appear to be on good terms, enough for something to happen with Black Adam that is bound to be a clean slate.
This would indicate the return of Dwayne Johnson but with a few odd men out. Foremost among those is Henry Cavill but, unless Gunn is thinking up things for their characters, intrigued fans may also bid early farewell to Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman — despite his reported spinoff — and his Justice Society teammates, especially Dr. Fate who can be explored further notwithstanding death.
