Jeffrey Dean Morgan Provides Grim Update on Flashpoint Film
The Flashpoint Paradox
Jeffrey Dean Morgan did a great job as Thomas Wayne in his brief appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Although he and Lauren Cohen were destined to die, fans have had other ideas in mind. In an alternate timeline, Thomas and Martha Wayne survived instead of Bruce. Leading Thomas to become a vengeful Batman and Martha to become a psychotic Joker. With these two actors cast in the part, countless fans would have loved the opportunity to see them play those roles. To see them become the greatest rivals in comic book history.
Sadly, that isn’t going to pass.
While giving an interview at last week’s San Diego Comic Con, Jeffrey Dean Morgan had some unfortunate news on the Flashpoint moviefront. Check out the quote here at the 9:36 mark.
Morgan explains, “When Zack Snyder was involved with the DC universe more, I think there was a real possibility. But now that he’s kind of stepped away a little bit I’ve heard different things that Flashpoint might not be going in that direction. It will be more of an origin story for Flash.”
It seems that Zack Snyder was the champion of the Flashpoint story within the DC Universe. No surprise considering he was the de facto godfather of this Universe. Now that he’s no longer in the picture, The Flash seems to be getting more attention than the Flashpoint film. That certainly makes sense. Ezra Miller’s Flash was one of the few shining lights of Justice League, he deserves to star in his own feature film.
That doesn’t close the book on the story. As Morgan says, all it takes is for the studio executives to listen to what fans want. And fans have been wanting Jeffrey Dean Morgan to play the Flashpoint Batman for a few years now. He’s a fantastic actor who’s beloved by comic fans of every genre thanks to his stint as Negan on The Walking Dead and his iconic role as the Comedian in Watchmen. Hopefully, he still has a future in the DC Universe.
Now, let’s talk about that “origin story”…
Gone in a…
Last time anyone checked, The Flash already had powers in Justice League. So what exactly is the origin in this “origin story” going to be? Jonathon Goldstein and John Francis Daley are set to write and direct The Flash movie for Warner Bros. An exciting prospect considering the team’s success on the film Game Night. With an actor like Ezra Miller, they should be able to write plenty of wonderful and charismatic scenes for the character.
But more importantly, The Flash in Justice League was hardly a hero. While he certainly lived up to his name and overcame all challenges, he was a rookie. A rookie who froze and didn’t know what to do, until Ben Affleck’s Batman instructed him to “save one person.” Watching Barry Allen grow over the course of that film is just a brief look at his potential. Central City is going to need saving at some point. It would be great for Barry to return to his home town and become the truly breathtakingly awesome superhero he was always meant to be.
While it’s sad to see Flashpoint go, for the time being, it’s good to hear that Ezra Miller’s Flash film won’t be a bloated affair filled with far-too-many storylines. Are you excited to see a Flash solo film? Let us know!
