After months of anticipation, Marvel has officially released the first full trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, revealing new plot details about the film, as well as the official appearances of three of the wall-crawler’s most notorious foes.

Opening with a shot of the battle-worn hero sitting in the rain, the trailer begins with narration from Peter (Tom Holland), who explains to Michelle (Zendaya), “Ever since I got bit by that spider, I’ve only had one week where my life has felt normal – That was when you found out”, hinting at a supposed rationalization for his previously revealed desire to re-hide his identity in the wake of the closing moments of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

However, it appears that Peter – as seen in the previous teaser trailer – interrupts the spell undertaken by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to accomplish this goal, kickstarting the film’s multiverse-centric plot.

“When you botched that spell where you wanted everyone to forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, we started getting some visitors,” Strange tells Spidey in reference to the subsequent appearance of past cinematic Spider-foes. “From every universe.”

Following a montage of the hero fighting one-on-one against his various villains, which ends with Peter, Michelle, and Ned making fun of a captured Otto Octavius’ name, Strange can next be heard telling Peter, “There are others out there. We need to send them back.”

“So, Scooby-Doo this crap!” he exclaims in conclusion, ensuring fans that the film will still feature the MCU’s signature quip-heavy script.

After being told by Doc Ock that he’s “just running out to fight ghosts,” Strange then reveals that all of Spider-Man’s multiversal opponents have been plucked prior to the conclusion of their respective films, informing Peter, “They all die fighting Spider-Man. It’s their fate. I’m sorry kid.”

It’s at this point that the trailer reveals the film’s secondary plot, as a defiant Spider-Man proceeds to attempt to save his foes from their pre-destined ends, begging Strange, “Look, there has to be another way!”

“There isn’t,” he replies. “They’re a danger to our universe.”

Again cutting to a montage of Spider-Man fighting what is safe to call the MCU’s version of the Sinister Six, the trailer then gives viewers their first full looks at the return of Jamie Foxx’s Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, this time sporting his proper-yellow-colored electricity:

Both Rhys Ifans’ Lizard from the first of Andrew Garfield’s outings in the red-and-blue webs and Thomas Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman from the widely-panned Spider-Man 3:

And Willem DaFoe’s iconic Green Goblin, as seen in Spider-Man’s classic 2002 cinematic debut:

As the trailer builds to a crescendo amidst further shots of environmental destruction and super-powered showdowns, it climaxes on a shot of Michelle falling from an in-construction skyscraper, hinting that Marvel may once again adapt the Death of Gwen Stacy – albeit with a different love interest – for the silver screen.

Finally, as the sky begins to crack purple and reveal more of the multiverse, as previously seen in Loki, Doctor Strange closes out the trailer by warning Peter, “They’re starting to come through.”

“And I can’t stop them,” he laments to the young web-head, who appears to be wearing a variant of the MCU Iron Spider costume inspired by the velocity suit featured in the Playstation-exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man (as seen in this article’s featured image).

Spider-Man: No Way Home webs its way exclusively into theaters on December 17th, 2021.
