Melissa McCarthy to Star in New DC Comics Movie
Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish are expected to star in the upcoming DC Comics film, The Kitchen.
Deadline reports that Melissa McCarthy is finalizing a deal to star in the film with Tiffany Haddish.
The Kitchen was a brief but interesting comic series for DC and Vertigo Comics. Not their usual superhero or supernatural fare. Instead The Kitchen was the tale of a few strong women keeping up their husband’s gangster life.
And who better to direct the project than Andrea Berloff, the writer of Straight Outta Compton.Â
Berloff will be making her directorial debut on the film, which is being made by New Line Cinema and DC Entertainment. The Kitchen probably won’t have anything to do with the DCEU. Instead, it’s a sign that DC is looking to take chances on their more obscure titles and stories. Considering just how many incredible tales are in the archives of DC, The Kitchen could be the first of many to see the light of day.
McCarthy doesn’t have the best track record lately, but this sounds right up her alley. Her career had a bit of a resurgence after her performance as Sean Spicer on Saturday Night Live. Hopefully, she can bring the same comedic energy to The Kitchen.Â
A Sign of Things to Come
The fact that this is a project about women made by women is nothing short of fantastic. This wouldn’t be the first time, just look at Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot. However, the fact that women are getting more representation on the Comic-Big Screen isn’t the only reason to get excited.
Tiffany Haddish and Andrea Berloff are both on the cusp of true stardom. Girls Trip was a breakout film for Haddish; Straight Outta Compton earned Berloff an Oscar Nomination. These women are artists to get excited about no matter what project they set their sights on. The fact that it’s a DC Comics film, with veteran comedy actress Melissa McCarthy, just adds to the elation.
Here’s the synopsis for the Vertigo comic book series created by writer Ollie Masters and artist Ming Doyle:
The Irish gangs of Hell’s Kitchen rule the neighborhood, bringing terror to the streets and doing the dirty work for the Italian Mafia. Jimmy Brennan and his crew were the hardest bastards in the Kitchen, but after they’re all put in prison, their wives – Kath, Raven and Angie – decide to keep running their rackets. And once they get a taste of the fast life and easy money, it won’t be easy to stop.
Straight Outta Compton was a true mix of comedy and drama. Expect the tone for The Kitchen to be very similar. It looks like DC Entertainment will be dipping their toes into a new genre entirely.
Hopefully, Berloff can lead McCarthy and Haddish to comic and comedy greatness in The Kitchen.Â
