Edge of Tomorrow saw Tome Cruise as a public relations officer with no combat training thrust into the front lines in a war against an invading alien race. Given his lack of experience Cruise is easily killed by the aliens. However, he finds himself in a time loop where he is resurrected after each death.
Cruise eventually approaches Emily Blunt’s Special Ops soldier Rita and discovers that she is stuck in the time loop as well. She eventually trains Cruise’s character and improves his combat skills after each death. As the two work together they focus on turning the tide of the battle against the alien invaders.
The film made over $370 million worldwide based off a $178 million production budget. The film was well received by both critics and audiences with it receiving a 90% on the Tomatometer as well as on the Audience Score.
The sequel will be produced by Erwin Stoff, Tom Lassally, and Masi Oka. Hisashi Sasaki will serve as an executive producer.
Deadline notes that Cruise and Blunt won’t sign onto the sequel until they see a script. The script will be developed by Liman alongside Matthew Robinson, who pitched the sequel to Warner Bros.
If all goes to plan, we might see a nice return for a sci-fi movie that was well made.
