Report: James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad Casts King Shark
After months of speculation that had a degree of certainty, a new report indicates King Shark is confirmed for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. And Gunn cast someone he has worked with before, on Guardians of the Galaxy, to fill the role of the maneater in the manner Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper brought life and personality to Rocket Raccoon and Groot.
Deadline broke the story over the weekend that comedian, writer, and actor Steve Agee will voice the hulking humanoid shark monster. No word yet on if Agee will also do motion capture but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Normally, Gunn or his brother Sean perform mo-capping on the set. Who’s Steve Agee?
Steve Agee is known for his acting in Lifetime’s American Princess, NBC’s Superstore, FX’s You’re the Worst, and Fox’s New Girl starring Zooey Deschanel. As a voice actor, Agee had stints on Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time and Netflix’s Twelve Forever.
Agee also is a musician in a band called Baked with Metalocalypse creator Brendon Small and was a writer for Jimmy Kimmel Live. He came to James Gunn’s attention when the two worked on Guardians Vol. 2 in which he played Gef of the Ravagers.
The Shark Who Would Be King
Created by Karl Kesel, King Shark started out in Superboy but became more closely associated with the Suicide Squad over time. He was very prominent in the Squad’s New 52 run and the animated feature Batman: Assault on Arkham (2014). The Sharkmeister has appeared on and off on CW’s The Flash as both friend and foe.
David Ayer’s Suicide Squad almost included him but he was ditched in favor of Killer Croc. An appearance in Gunn’s Suicide Squad was hinted at and reported up to now as if practically a given. Gunn dropped clues Shark would be in his film. The latest came from a King Shark-themed birthday cake.
Michael Rooker, a Gunn favorite, was reported as the guy to bring King Shark to life, but he quickly repudiated the headlines as inaccurate speculation. (Related: Michael Rooker Responds to King Shark Reports for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad)
Plot details are a secret thus far but may involve a beast in a prison. Said beast could be King Shark himself which might mean he is a focal point of the story, described as from a villain perspective. If not, imagine the fight sequences we’re in for between him and the actual beast. (Related: The Suicide Squad: An Alleged Leaked Audition Sample May Reveal Plot Details)
Shooting for an August 2021 release, The Suicide Squad heads into production at Pinewood Studios in Georgia this September despite Hollywood’s friction with the Peach State over an abortion bill this year. (Related: Report: James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is Expected to Film in Georgia)
