Rumor: Best Buy to Remove Disney Star Wars DVDs and Blu-Rays
A new rumor suggests Best Buy is removing Star Wars DVDs and Blu-rays from its stores.
YouTuber Doomcock reports, “My spies reported to me that not an hour ago that all Disney Star Wars is being pulled from Best Buy shelves.”
Doomcock shows a picture of a cart full of Star Wars DVD and Blu-rays that include Solo: A Star Wars Story and The Last Jedi among others. Doomcock adds, “This is not a rumor. This is fact. All of the movies on that cart are DIsney Star Wars they couldn’t sell. These Disney Star Wars DVDs are being replaced by George Lucas Star Wars DVDs. The original and prequel trilogy films in new repackaging. But even so the entire Star Wars section at Best Buy is being downsized by half.”
He continues, “As of now, The Force Awakens has no spot in the store at all. Neither does Rogue One. Solo and Last Jedi are only available in the section of Best Buy that has 4K movies because there is not a great selection of those. But neither of those movies has any representation in the Best Buy Star Wars section anymore.”
Doomcock then states, “This confirms exactly what we thought. Disney Star Wars is a colossal failure of staggering proportions. And sales of this garbage are so anemic that Best Buy believes that repackaged version of movies 40 years old will out sell them.”
Disney has admitted Star Wars is struggling on almost all fronts during their latest investor call and in their Q3 financial report.
Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed attendance at Disneyland’s Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge was down point to a number of factors from increased prices at Disneyland, expectations of large crowds, and increased prices for hotels and airfare before stated, “And so all of those factors contributed to attendance that was below what we would have hoped it would be.” (Related: Disney CEO Bob Iger Confirms Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Attendance Lower Than Expected)
Disney’s Chief Financial Office Christine McCarthy confirmed attendance was down 3%.
“I just want to put more granularity on the Disney Land results for the quarter. As I said, the attendance was down 3% but the paid attendance was up in the quarter and that lower attendance was primarily driven by the annual pass holder visitation and when we look at the, the per cap spend across Disneyland all categories, they were up significantly year-over-year.”
Not only did Disney admit their attendance at Disneyland for Galaxy’s Edge was down, but their Q3 financial report also revealed merchandise sales for Star Wars declined. (Related: Report: Disneyland’s Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Employees See Hours Cut as Attendance Doesn’t Meet Disney’s Expectations)
“The increase at our consumer products business was due to growth at our merchandise licensing and retail businesses. Growth at merchandise licensing was primarily due to higher revenue from merchandise based on Toy Story, partially offset by a decrease from Star Wars merchandise. The increase at our retail business was due to higher comparable store sales and online revenue.”
They also admitted that Solo: A Star Wars Story was a complete and utter disaster at the box office.
“The increase in theatrical distribution results was due to the performance of Avengers: Endgame, Aladdin, Captain Marvel and Toy Story 4 in the current quarter compared to Avengers: Infinity War, Incredibles 2, Black Panther and Solo: A Star Wars Story in the prior-year quarter.”
