If this rumor turns out to be true it will be Sony’s second superhero film to arrive in 2021 alongside the follow-up to Spider-Man: Far From Home, which will release July 16th, 2021.
It would also mean there are five MCU films coming out in 2021.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will release February 12th, 2021.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is (hopefully) going to release on May 7th, 2021.
Thor Love and Thunder will be released on November 5th, 2021.

Not only would this make 5 MCU films in 2021, but there are a number of DC Comics films coming out that year as well.
Matt Reeve’s The Batman is set for June 25th, 2021. of that year.
James Gunn’s Suicide Squad is expected to debut August 6, 2021.
Finally, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Black Adam is expected to hit theaters on December 22, 2021.
Needless to say, 2021 will be packed. That’s without mentioning Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World sequel. There’s also the Fast and Furious franchise coming out with yet another film.
We also have Avatar 2, a fourth Matrix film, the James Wan produced Mortal Kombat movie, the next installment of the John Wick franchise, and a seventh Mission Impossible.
Nerdy Speculation
With the announcement, comes speculation about what that Sony and Marvel movie could be.

There were rumors circulating that a Madame Web film could fill that spot.
Back in August 2018, Richard Wenk was reportedly working on a Kraven the Hunter screenplay. Other projects in the works at the time included Silk, Jackpot, and Nightwatch.
Sony reportedly had a script for Nightwatch from Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker and was allegedly courting Spike Lee to direct the film. Coker has since left the project.

In 2018, Sony was also about to start shooting their Silver & Black film featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat. However, the movie was scrapped in June 2018 and pulled from their release schedule.
Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch explained they believed Black Cat should get her own solo film. He told Variety, “We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film.”
Drew Goddard was also attached to write and direct a Sinister Six movie before Marvel and Sony cut a deal to bring Spider-Man into the MCU.
Goddard spoke about the project describing it as “bananas” to The Playlist:
“[‘Sinister Six’] was really fun. I wouldn’t have done it had I not thought there was a real opportunity to do something different and exciting and just flat-out bananas. It was very much me and — a much more commercial version of — the ‘Cabin [in the Woods]’ mentality. The punk rock mentality that led to ‘Cabin’ is very much at the core of ‘Sinister Six.’ That’s a fun one. Who knows, it could see the light of day.”

One would think the most likely candidate would be a Sinister Six film given that would feature Spider-Man and Spider-Man is the only Spider-Verse character who has crossed over into the MCU at this point.
However, given the recent Morbius trailer which features Michael Keaton looking like Vulture from the MCU, the relationship between Sony and Marvel might have radically changed over the summer when the two companies renegotiated their deal to keep Spider-Man in the MCU.
It’s possible we could see Sony and Marvel go with the Black Cat solo film to launch a new franchise. It’s also possible we could get a Carnage film sooner rather than later.

Needless to say there are quite a bit of opportunities. It could even be a Miles Morales solo film or even a Spider-Gwen film. We did hear rumors earlier this year about a Spider-Gwen arriving in the MCU.
What do you think this mystery movie could be if this rumor is true? What do you hope it will be?
