Samuel L. Jackson Confirms Flerken For Captain Marvel – Teases Mar-Vell and Tesseract Connection
Samuel L. Jackson, who will be reprising his role as Nick Fury, in the upcoming Captain Marvel film confirmed the presence of Carol Danvers’ powerful ally from the comics, her cat, which is really a member of the alien species known as Flerken. Not only did Jackson confirm the presence of the Flerken in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he also teased the appearance of Mar-Vell as well as the Tesseract.
The Flerken
Jackson spoke to Entertainment Tonight where he confirmed the presence of the Flerken.
“He who? He me? I’ve heard the cat referred to as a Flerken. I didn’t know what that meant, so I vaguely have an idea now what that means.”
Jackson had previously teased the Flerken when he took to Instagram to reveal a hoodie showcasing Captain Marvel’s pet cat. For those unfamiliar with Marvel Comics, Carol’s cat known as Chewie in the comics would be revealed to be a Flerken when she has an encounter with Rocket Raccoon. Rocket informs Carol of how dangerous Flerken’s are explaining, “In addition to being vicious killers, they’re also living gateways to pocket dimensions.”
As far as just how vicious they are, they have multiple squid like tentacles that eject out of their mouths!
Mar-Vell
But confirming the presence of the Flerken in Captain Marvel and the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn’t the only spoiler-esque reveal that Jackson gave us. He also teased the presence of Mar-Vell.
“And we’re actually entering a ship that belonged to a doctor from Carol Danvers’ past. She’s trying to find some answers to what happened, why he was on Earth and what that whole power core thing– Seems like the Tesseract has been the constant in all these movies.”
The most prominent doctor in Carol’s past in the comics was Doctor Walter Lawson. Kree hero Mar-Vell adopts Lawson’s identity after the doctor is murdered by the villainous Kree Yon-Rogg. Mar-Vell adopts Lawson’s identity in order to infiltrate the United Stats military base known as The Cape. Lawson had just been transferred to the base due to his expertise on missiles and robotics.
Given what we’ve seen from the Captain Marvel trailers and teasers released so far, it’s quite possible that Jude Law is playing both Mar-Vell and Yon-Rogg. Marvel’s official site recently labeled Law as Mar-Vell, the leader of the Starforce. However, a Marvel Legends toy revealed that Yon-Rogg is the leader of the Starforce. In their first look at Captain Marvel, Entertainment Weekly labeled Law’s character as the leader of Starforce. Starforce is the Kree team that Captain Marvel is apart of.
However, the Kree appear to have technology that can manipulate or at least partially erase people’s memories. Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers arrives on Earth struggling to remember her past. Even in training exercises with Jude Law’s character she notes she doesn’t remember her past. It’s possible that Jude Law might actually be playing Mar-Vell, who has been brainwashed into thinking he is Yon-Rogg.
And just who could have done this brainwashing? The obvious answer is the Kree villain Ronan the Accuser. Or it’s possible Marvel might stay true to the original Ms. Marvel origin and see Carol get struck by the Psyche-Magnitron. Carol gains her powers when the experimental Psyche-Magnitron equipment explodes. Mar-Vell leaps in front of the explosion and uses his body to protect Carol. In so doing, his DNA is fused into Carol granting her fantastical powers. The Psyche-Magnitron explosion might have caused not only Carol to lose her memories, but Mar-Vell as well.
Following the explosion Carol is taken to the Kree home world where she is trained to become a member of the Starforce by a now brainwashed Mar-Vell. Another idea could be that Mar-Vell dies in the explosion with the Psyche-Magnitron and Yon-Rogg impersonates Mar-Vell.
The Tesseract
What’s really interesting about Jackson’s comments is his mention of the Tesseract. The Tesseract was eventually revealed to be the Space Stone, but it initially appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger and was used to power the soldiers of HYDRA, who were operating in Germany during World War II. The Tesseract would eventually teleport the Red Skull into space where he became the guardian of the Soul Stone, but the Tesseract would be recovered by Howard Stark.

We know S.H.I.E.L.D., which was infiltrated by HYDRA, would begin developing weapons with the Tesseract that would show up in the first Avengers film. However, we don’t know much about what happened with the Tesseract between the end of Captain America: The First Avenger and the beginning of The Avengers. It looks like Captain Marvel might fill some of those gaps in the Tesseract’s history.
It’s even possible that the Skrulls and the Kree are drawn to Earth because of the Tesseract and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s weaponizing of the technology.
What do you make of Samuel L. Jackson’s newest revelations? What role do you think the Flerken will play in Captain Marvel? Who do you think Jude Law is playing? What are your Mar-Vell and Yon-Rogg theories? How does the Tesseract fit into everything?
