Spider-Man: Homecoming Writers Return For Sequel!
Spider-Man: Homecoming writers, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, are set to come back and write the planned sequel.
Chris and Erik worked on Spider-Man: Homecoming and are in the final stages of negotiations to return for the sequel. If all is done, we should see the pair return to pen the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios sequel. As for director Jon Watts, he’s currently in talks to return as the director as well.
Spider-Man was rebooted and brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) when he debuted in Captain America: Civil War. His story continued with this summer’s release of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The movie was a major hit both in terms of gross receipts, and critical response. Domestically alone it made over $319 million dollars. Its foreign gross was $418 million bringing it to a worldwide total of $737 million.
With the success of the Sony and Marvel joint venture, we can hold out hope that other studios will look to use this formula with other franchises from the Marvel world. The Fantastic Four could definitely use some help from Marvel Studios.
Now that the behind the camera crew is being brought back together, we can expect the sequel to live up to the foundation left behind in Homecoming.
Sony and Marvel are hoping to keep many of the creative elements of Homecoming together. Tom Holland is already set to return as the web-crawling hero.
Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is scheduled for a July 5, 2019, release. This will set it a few months after the release of Captain Marvel and the untitled Avengers 4 movie. Those movies are expected to hit theaters on March 8 and May 3, 2019, respectively. One has to wonder how the events of Avengers: Infinity War will affect Spider-Man.
Is it possible that a tie-in with the Skrulls will happen? Since Sony is creating an entire Spider-verse, will the events of Infinity Wars see Peter face off against Venom? The Venom movie is already in the works, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to see the web slinger go toe to toe against the evil symbiote.
Because of Sony’s push to create a Spider-Verse, we might get to see some villains that we have been wanting to see for some time. They could include Kraven the Hunter, Silver Sable, or Black Cat. Vote in our poll below and let us know who you want to be the main villain the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel.
