‘Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow’ Taps ‘Vampire Diaries’ Actress And Writer Ana Nogueira To Pen Script

One of James Gunn’s flagship projects in his DCU is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is a total reboot of the Girl of Steel. It’ll be her third rendition in ten years after The CW’s Supergirl starring Melissa Benoist and Sasha Calle’s turn in The Flash. The latter could conceivably reprise, but no DCEU means everything is fair game.

No casting has been made official yet, but Gunn is going in the direction he wants, so safe to say he probably seeks to cast someone new and possibly unknown in the vein of Christopher Reeve. First, though, he needs a script, which he appears to have found along with its scribe per an Instagram post welcoming Ana Nogueira to the fold.

“A hearty public welcome to Ana Nogueira to the DC Studios family,” Gunn wrote in his post. “Ana is an amazing writer whose screenplay adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow is above and beyond anything I hoped it would be. We’re excited to be moving forward on this unique take on Supergirl in this beautiful, star-spanning tale.”

Gamesradar reports Nogueira was originally hired for the scrapped Supergirl movie that was to spin off from The Flash, so she is as much of a holdover from the DCEU as Andy Muschietti is. Gunn may be holding onto aspects of that phase since he loved the aforementioned film, which flopped horrendously despite his ringing endorsement.

Whatever her story entails impresses Gunn, but its nitty-gritty is an unknown quantity at this stage of production. Nogueira is a bit of one herself in terms of her writing career. Primarily an actress in film and on TV shows such as The Vampire Diaries and The Blacklist, Woman of Tomorrow is her first feature film script.

It’s also her only upcoming screenwriting credit and her second after a short film called We Win, which was made in 2018. According to IMDB, the plot involves a happy couple whose life unravels over a game of “Mafia.” Details beyond that are scarce. We haven’t seen the short — much less heard of it before now — so we plead the fifth on how it unfolds.
