‘The Bear’ Star Jeremy Allen White Reveals He Torpedoed His Own Marvel Career After Asking Studio To Sell Him On Potential Role: “They Were Like, ‘F—k You’”
While a role in the ongoing franchise has in recent years been touted as a monumental ‘success point’ among Hollywood actors – or at least, they were up until the studio’s recent streak of post-Avengers: Endgame stinkers – The Bear star Jeremy Allen White has revealed that not only has he never felt too strongly about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also that thanks to this disinterest, his one and only meeting on the topic ended with Disney telling him to essentially get lost.
The actor recalled the story of his short-lived dance with Marvel while reflecting on his career trajectory during a recent interview given to GQ UK’s Cam Wolf.
Speaking to the aforementioned fact that the MCU has become an almost expected stop for nearly every actor, but especially up-and-comers, White revealed to Wolf that though he had once been approached to star in a Marvel project, his own self-respect quickly soured the conversation.
“I had a meeting for a kind of Marvel-y movie, and I had an attitude,” said White. “I think I played it all wrong.”
But rather than leap at the chance to join the flailing franchise, White says he instead asked the Marvel heads who met him at the table to “Tell me about why I should do your movie.”
And according to White, this move was not received favorably by the studio’s representatives.
”They were like, ‘F—k you’,” he noted. “And I was like, ‘Right on.’”
Sadly, White did not provide any details on which specific Marvel project or role he was approached for.
However, despite missing out on all the fame and fortune that would have fallen his way had he suited up in his own, over-lined and over-designed superhero outfit, White admitted that, at the end of the day, he had no regrets about being left out of the MCU.
Though he told Wolf during that their initial meeting that he felt “confused at how the pinnacle of an actor’s career has ended up in that place,” he told the reporter roughly a year later that despite how Marvel is able to “get really good filmmakers to do those movies and obviously they get really good actors to do those movies,” he was ultimately satisfied that, “I played it the way I wanted to play it.”
Wolf’s next project, an autobiographical film based on the life of WCW wrestling legend Kevin Von Erich in which he plays his son, Kerry, is set to hit theaters on December 22nd.
