‘The Flash’ Director Andy Muschietti Echoes ‘Shazam! Fury Of The Gods’ Director David F. Sandberg Regarding Possibility Of A Sequel
The Flash director Andy Muschietti recently addressed the possibility of a sequel and what it will take for that to happen, and interestingly enough his comments echo that of Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg.
If you recall, Sandberg took to Twitter at the end of February to address a fan who wanted to know about the future of Shazam given all of the turmoil surrounding the future of DC projects with James Gunn and Peter Safran being appointed DC Studios CEOs and rolling out their own vision for DC that will begin with Superman: Legacy.
Sandberg informed the fan, “He definitely won’t if people don’t go see this movie. What I’ve been told is that there’s nothing in the Shazam films that contradict the future plans for DC. So the possibility for more Shazam is there and if that’s what you want your best bet is to go see the film.”
Sandberg wasn’t the only one to make it clear that Shazam’s fate depended on the box office success of the film. The film’s screenwriter Henry Gayden told The Hollywood Reporter, ” “As far as Shazam moving forward, they’ve said that, if this movie does well, then we can continue in their universe. So it’s really kind of contingent on this weekend, and the next weekend and the weekend after that.””
Muschietti would make similar comments in an interview with ComicBook.com when asked about the possibility of a sequel.
He said, “We didn’t talk about it. I think that we’re all waiting to see how this movie does.”
However, he added, “Of course, there’s excitement about continuing the story, especially if this movie’s successful. Of course, there’s an architecture in DC that is brewing, and it’s being created. And the question is, will this new architecture absorb this story?”
“The good thing about the multiverse is that it is possible. The multiverse allows all of this different worlds to coexist and interact. And so hopefully, yes. We don’t know yet. That’s the truth,” he concluded.
While it’s unclear what the fate of The Flash will be at this point, what is clear is that Shazam! Fury of the Gods only grossed $57.5 million domestically and another $74.6 million internationally for a global gross of $132.1 million. The film had a $125 million production budget, meaning the film more than likely lost Warner Bros. a significant amount of money depending on how much they spent on marketing.
Following the poor box office returns and just a week after the movie had been in theaters Sandberg announced he was moving on from Shazam and superhero films in general writing on Twitter, “As I’ve been saying for a while now I’m very eager to go back to horror (as well as trying some new things). After six years of Shazam I’m definitely done with superheroes for now.”
He went on to clarify, “Just to be clear, I don’t regret even for a second making the Shazam movies. I’ve learned so much and gotten to work with some truly amazing people. Will forever be grateful that I got to direct two of these! They’ve been very challenging but valuable experiences.”
He then concluded, “One thing I’ve really been looking forward to is disconnecting from the superhero discourse online. A lot of that stresses me out so much and it will be nice not having to think about that anymore.”
What do you make of Muschietti’s comments? What are your predictions for The Flash’s box office grosses?
