The Suicide Squad Director James Gunn Describes Most Current Superhero Movies As “Boring”
The Suicide Squad director James Gunn recently described most of the current superhero movie fare as “boring.”
As reported by ScreenRant, Gunn spoke with SFX Magazine where he provided his opinion on current superhero films.
Gunn stated, “They’re mostly boring to me right now!”
He then added, “[Laughs] I loved them at the beginning and there are still people trying to do different things [with them], so it’s not a 100% rule, but a lot of them are boring.”
Gunn didn’t name which superhero films he was talking about although there have been quite a few of them released in the past two years including Birds of Prey, Bloodshot, The New Mutants, Wonder Woman 1984, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and Black Widow.
There have also been quite a number of superhero television shows as well that includes The Boys, Loki, WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Batwoman, Supergirl, Black Lightning, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, Ragnarok, The Umbrella Academy, Warrior Nun, Watchmen, and Jupiter’s Legacy.
As for Gunn, he’s quite entrenched in superhero fare. He did the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films at Marvel Studios and is scheduled to return for the third one. Along with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he will also be filming a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
Outside of Marvel, The Suicide Squad comes out later this year and he has a Peacemaker spin-off series in the works at HBO Max as well.
Aside from directing, Gunn’s also produced and written quite a number of superhero films including 2019’s Brightburn and 2010’s Super.
He also plans to ensure that The Suicide Squad is not boring. Back in August 2020, during DC Comics DC FanDome, Gunn described the film saying, “It’s gonna be different from any superhero movie ever made.”
He went on to state, “I was excited with an opportunity to be able to do The Suicide Squad in the way it could be done from my point of view.”
“This is by far the biggest movie I’ve ever made,” he added.
Gunn would conclude the FanDome sneak peek stating, “This has been truly the greatest and most exciting journey of my life, making this film.”
Gunn isn’t the only one to express a similar opinion, Solo: A Star Wars Story actor Donald Glover, who played Lando Calrissian in the film, also expressed his opinion that most modern TV and film is boring.
Glover wrote on Twitter, “We’re getting boring stuff and not even experimental mistakes(?) because people are afraid of getting cancelled.”
He added, “so they like they can only experiment w/ aesthetic. (also because some of em know theyre not that good).”
What do you make of Gunn’s comments on the current state of superhero films?
