Marvel Studios and Disney announced during their Disney+ Day celebration in November 2021 that they were developing a new X-Men series set in the X-Men: The Animated Series and announced that Beau DeMayo as the executive producer and header writer.

Their official description as part of their Disney+ Day press release stated that X-Men ’97 is “an animated series from Marvel Studios that explores new stories in the iconic ‘90s timeline of the original series.” Disney and Marvel Studios have not announced any other X-Men projects.

Back in 2019, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige made it abundantly clear that Marvel Studios would not be bringing the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe any time soon.

He told io9, “It’ll be a while. It’s all just beginning and the five-year plan that we’ve been working on, we were working on before any of that was set.”

“So really it’s much more, for us, less about specifics of when and where (the X-Men will appear) right now and more just the comfort factor and how nice it is that they’re home. That they’re all back. But it will be a very long time,” he added.

While Marvel hasn’t officially announced an X-Men project aside from the animated series for Disney+, Waldron is also the writer for the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness project.

In the first trailer for the film, Patrick Stewart’s voice is heard.

Stewart previously portrayed Charles Xavier aka Professor X of the X-Men in multiple films from the first X-Men film that premiered in 2000 to Logan in 2017.

In between those two films, he also played the character in X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

While IMDb credits Stewart as Professor X for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel Studios has not confirmed his role. However, scooper Mikey Sutton at Geekosity claims Stewart’s voice in the trailer heralds the X-Men arriving in the film.

Sutton writes, “Marvel Studios will introduce the X-Men with their previous incarnations. Thus, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a tribute to Marvel’s theatrical past.”

He also notes, “Before going forward, Marvel Studios takes a look back and waves goodbye. And the X-Men find their way home.”

On top of Sutton’s claims, an alleged massive Reddit leak from user MatthewFreeman235 also claims the X-Men will be showing up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Specifically, the user claims that Professor X and Magneto are part of the Illuminati in the film. It goes on to claim that “both Professor X and Magneto have comic-accurate costumes with Professor X having a hovering wheelchair like in the 90s cartoon. Magento looks very similar to his look in X-Men 2000.”

Professor X and Magneto won’t be the only X-Men in the film according to this leak. It also claims Famke Jansen’s Jean Grey, Halle Berry’s Storm, James Marsden’s Cyclops, and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine are all in the film as well.

The leaker described one scene, “Jean Grey and Wolverine do damage to Wanda, but she uses Jean Grey’s power against Wolverine and he slowly gets incinerated like in X-Men: The Last Stand.”

“Jean Grey is finished off by Wanda by trapping her in a sort of ‘power sphere’ where a combination of the chaos magic and the Phoenix kill her,” the Reddit user adds.

As for Professor X and Magneto they also meet grisly ends, “Professor X attempts to rid the quickly decaying Wanda variant of the Scarlet Witch, but his neck is broken. Magneto tries to reason with his ‘daughter’, but Wanda completely decimates him.”

Not only will the film allegedly feature the original live-action X-Men from the early 2000s, but it will also feature the newer X-Men actors.

The leak states, “Sophie Turner, Micheal Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Alexandra Shipp return as their respective X-Men characters.”

What do you make of Michael Waldron writing an X-Men film? Are there any comic book storylines you’d like to see him adapt or would you want to see an original story?
