Transformers Spin-Off Bumblebee Gets Surprising Rotten Tomatoes Score

Transformers spin-off Bumblebee starring John Cena and Hailee Steinfeld and directed by Travis Knight based off a script from Christina Hodson just had it’s Rotten Tomatoes score revealed and surprisingly enough it opened to a perfect 100% score.

Rotten Tomatoes released the score with 19 reviews in with critics giving it an average rating of 7.4/10.

Here’s what some of the critics are saying:

Liz Shannon Miller from IndieWire writes, “Fans of the classic “Transformers” will be thrilled by many of the touches here. But there is also now an entire generation of kids who are going to get to watch a girl drive, with a smile on her face.”

Justin Lowe from the Hollywood Reporter gives his thoughts, “It’s an effective reimagining that also bears a knowing resemblance to classic youth-oriented films from Bumblebee executive producer Steven Spielberg.”

Peter Debruge from Variety will make fans of the classic Transformers happy as he writes, “”Bumblebee” is basically the movie that fans of the 1980s animated series wanted all along.”

Ben Rolph from Discussing Film adds, “For true Transformers fans this prequel will serve as a melancholic coming-of-age journey into the backstory of Bee and a great ‘restart’ to the direction of the film series as a whole.”

Edward Douglas from The Weekend Warriors admits he isn’t a Transformers fan, but had quite a bit of high praise for the film, “Bumblebee was quite a wonderful experience even for this non-Transformers fan. I can only imagine that true fans should be thrilled that a movie finally captures what they love about those robots.”

Now, granted this is only 19 reviews from critics and the audience score isn’t in, but things might be looking up for the Transformers franchise in Bumblebee.

While critic reviews might be looking up for Bumblebee as it’s release nears, the movie will face some extremely stiff competition this Christmas season. Not only will Bumblebee go head to head with Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns on its opening weekend, but it will also face competition from this upcoming weekend’s releases in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Mortal Engines, and The Mule. Not to mention Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet has been a juggernaut at the box office for nearly the past month. You also have The Grinch, Creed II, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

In fact, the most recent long-range tracking for the film done by Shawn Robbins at Pro Box Office projected Bumblebee would only have an opening weekend between $15 and $25 million. Robbins pointed to the Transformers franchise losing its good faith with audiences as most recent films in the franchise might have had box office success, but have soured many audience members and fans. However, there is a bit of optimism in Robbins’ report, “family appeal and word of mouth could go a long way toward giving it healthy legs into early 2019.”

There are definitely going to be some tough decisions for families and moviegoers to make this holiday season. Will Bumblebee make the cut or will it fall by the side with folks choosing Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns?
