X-Men: First Class Director Matthew Vaughn Eyes Major DC Film

attends the World Premiere of "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" at Odeon Leicester Square on September 18, 2017 in London, England.

DC Films had an…interesting year. Wonder Woman was their most critically lauded film thus far. A wonderful success with plenty of audience recognition. Then came Justice League. DC’s first major team-up, a film that may have cost almost twice as much as Patty Jenkins’ directed Wonder Woman. But now they’re looking to the horizon. Next year will see only one DC film, Aquaman, released into theaters. What comes after?

Well, Matthew Vaughn has been the subject of many a discussion when it comes to DC’s future. The X-Men First Class and Kingsman: The Golden Circle director has been attached to many comic book properties over the years. Considering he put Kick-Ass on the map, it’s no surprise whatsoever. But now, Vaughn has his eyes on one of the biggest heroes of all time, Superman.

In an interview with IGN, Matthew Vaughn reveals that he’s not only had talks with DC, but that he would prefer working with them over Marvel. But not for the reasons you might think.

I’m at that stage in my career where it’s quite important to me who I’m working with … I do love the world of DC, and I’ve been talking to them at the moment about a few things. It’s more fun getting involved with franchises when they’re on the down, because then it’s easier to make a good film. So if I got involved with a few of the superhero films out there that have been disappointing, it’s going to at least… if I do OK, it’ll probably be better.

Interesting to say the least. His desire to work with the studio because there would be less pressure is certainly understandable. Was that an underhanded compliment, or a flat-out insult? It seems like he is taking a similar approach to comic book legend Frank Miller, who always recommends getting on the book that is about to be canceled because editors give you more creative control.

Look to the Horizon

Superman

Chances are Matthew Vaughn was simply being a bit cheeky with his comment.

Everyone who’s aware of film, comics or pop culture in general is aware that DC films isn’t in the best position at the moment. What was to be their biggest blockbuster of all time ended up as their biggest flop. One that could actually cost the studio $50-100 million dollars. Vaughn knows that no matter what character he would tackle over at DC there would already be a lot of expectations.

But things haven’t been going so well for a few years now. That takes a certain amount of pressure off of his shoulders and gives him some room to breathe. If Vaughn is actually granted some creative control over his project he is truly capable of creating something special. Vaughn has been a fan of the boy scout, Superman, for quite some time. Hopefully the two will get a chance to meet one another in the near future.
