Ben Barnes Teases Dark Story Line For Netflix’s Upcoming ‘The Punisher’ Series
Ever since Daredevil Season 2, fans have been amazed by the interpretation of The Punisher seen on Netflix. Finally, Marvel’s The Punisher is set to stream live this coming November. So far Netflix’s track record has been quite impressive. If early reviews of Marvel’s The Defenders are any insight, this trend should continue on.
Speaking to Da Man Magazine Ben Barnes opened up about his role as Bill Russo aka Jigsaw in the upcoming Punisher series. Unlike many counterparts within the Marvel universe, The Punisher doesn’t benefit from super powers, magic, or advanced intellect. All Frank Castle has is his insane drive to pursue what he sees as justice. Justice that he believes is lacking in our current and corrupt system.
Ben Barnes teased what we can expect to see:
I was really pleased at the grounded, tough approach to the material. Our show is about men suffering tragedy and trauma; it’s about a very real topic set in a world of superheroes — but no character in our show has superpowers and that makes it feel unique in this universe.
In speaking of his own character, Jigsaw. Barnes spoke about the pressure he faces when trying to bring to life a character that rivals someone like Frank Castle.
Barnes elaborated:
It was a great challenge to find a character to appear opposite the Punisher. When a character is compelling and violent and charismatic like that, the challenge is to find the qualities that will balance him out or complement him.
He also revealed that he never expected to take on the role of Jigsaw, but he’s honored to play the part and get to fully flesh out the character:
It’s a nice badge to be included in the universe we know so well, certainly. All actors imagine if they were a superhero or villain, which one would it be? In my case, it’s not one I ever thought of but it’s nice to be able to define one without too many expectations of how he should be!
Ben Barnes has had strong work on the small screen working on such shows as HBO’s Westworld. You might also remember him as Sam Adams in Sons of Liberty.
The Punisher debuts on Netflix this November.
