The Mandalorian Executive Producer Dave Filoni confirmed the timeframe of the Disney+ Star Wars series “goes all the way up to Episode VII.”

In an interview with StarWars.com, Filoni was asked how he maps all the factions of the Mandalorians that will be showcased in the show.

He responded, “Whitboards. Whiteboards. It goes beyond just those groups, right? Jon and I know we’re in this time period post-Return of the Jedi that, you know, in some ways we think of as all the way up to Episode VII.”

He continued, “So you always moved between big known things in the cinematic world. And we plot those out. We discuss groups, we discuss characters, we discuss who should come into the story or who should not. It’s a layered thing and, obviously, by the third season we have a lot of people in play already.”

“And so characters like Bo, it’s more getting down to what are they about, you know, and if it makes sense to bring somebody else in we will, but it’s all valuable to us to understand what’s going on in the greater galaxy. So you understand the history of the period, which informs our characters” Filoni concluded.

Favreau then shared his thoughts saying, “It was pretty fresh snow for awhile, you know. So you had clues from what we knew from the movies that came before this. We know what’s happening after, and we knew the Clone Wars, and then there’s even EU material that had been embraced by the fans. So we want to account for everything and take everything into consideration.”

He continued, “But  now we also have stuff that we’ve done. And we also have Ahsoka and we have Skeleton Crew. We have other stories that are taking place that we want to make sure are consistent and that as we pulse through the different little moments of the time frame that we’re all on the same page as we’re working through that.”

“And Dave is really the pivot point for all of it, as well as the other things that are happening before and after this,” he concluded.

The idea that the show leads up to Episode VII was made crystal clear by Jon Favreau before an episode of the show even aired.

Favreau posted to Instagram a mock opening scrawl for the show that read, ”

“After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order.”

It continued, “We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic….”

More recently, Favreau was even more crystal clear the show would tie in with Disney’s Sequel Trilogy when he spoke with Moovy TV.

The YouTuber asked, “You spoke about needing to have a team to keep track of all this continuity that you got going. Is it a challenge also as a storyteller knowing where this universe, this galaxy of Star Wars is like 20, 25 years down the road in terms of the sequel trilogy and having to match up with that?”

Favreau replied, “Yeah. It’s a little closer than that now. We’ve been on the air a little bit.”

“It’s interesting because, you know, what’s come before, and then in our time period there’s also been extended universe fiction,” Favreau continued. “There’s characters that have been slowly introduced in [Star Wars Rebels] like Thrawn. So there’s a lot of stuff that’s in canon like canon proper. But I think there’s different tiers of things.”

Even more recently speaking with Yahoo Entertainment, Favreau was asked, “Jon, you recently described Season 3 as a middle chapter to a much larger story. Do you guys have any idea…?”

He responded, “The middle chapters to a much larger story. Well, I think middle might mean I hope I do a lot more. So hopefully it’s the middle. Maybe it’s the beginning of a larger story.”

Filoni then said, “You could see it either way. It’s a bit puzzling that way.”

Favreau then said, “We know we’ve got about 30 years to play in the sandbox before we have established lore.”
