Report: Ms. Marvel Disney+ Series in Development
A new report suggests Marvel Studios and Disney are developing a Kamala Kahn and Ms. Marvel show for Disney+.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will focus on Kamala Khan. Disney and Marvel have reportedly hired British writer Bisha K. Ali to be the writer and showrunner for the series.
Ali has almost zero writing credits to her name. She did an episode of Sex Education, and has seven staff writing credits for the Hulu’s TV remake of Four Weddings and a Funeral. She describes herself on her website as a “screenwriter and stand-up comedian known for her personal, political comedy.” She also notes that she can be “frequently heard on the Guilty Feminist podcast.”
THR’s report did not give any details about the show’s plot or when it might go into production or hit the streaming service.
The news about a Ms. Marvel show shouldn’t come as surprise. Mindy Kaling revealed to MTV News back in June that she had spoke with Marvel about a Ms. Marvel project. (Related: Mindy Kaling Confirms Discussions With Marvel Studios About Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan)
She stated, “I think the people I’ve spoken to [at] Marvel about it are so excited about the character, and I think that they’re trying to figure out what to do with it, and I told them I would help in any way, because I truly love her.” She added, “But they seemed really interested, and I think they will probably do something.”
In fact, Kaling even hinted they would more than likely launch Ms. Marvel on Disney+, “No that there’s, like, this streaming platform with them it might be something like that.”
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige also confirmed they were working on Ms. Marvel in May 2018. (Related: Kevin Feige Confirms Marvel Studios Will Introduce Ms. Marvel)
He told the BBC, “We are doing Captain Marvel right now. Captain Marvel is shooting right now with Brie Larson. Ms. Marvel which is another character in the comic books, the Muslim hero, who is inspired by Captain Marvel is definitely, sort of, in the works. We have plans for that once we’ve introduced Captain Marvel to the world.”
The Khamala Khan version of Ms. Marvel was introduced in Captain Marvel #14 in 2013. Unlike the Carol Danvers version of Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan is an Inhuman who gains her powers after being exposed to Terrigen Mist.
Her powers are similar to Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four. She is able to stretch out her arms and legs and change her shape. However, she also has the ability to take on other people’s likeness and change her appearance at will. In fact, when she first gains her powers she takes on the likeness of Carol Danvers.
