Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson reportedly spoke to The Mandalorian’s executive producer Dave Filoni about directing an episode of The Mandalorian.

This report comes from Twitter user Sariah Wilson.

Wilson previously detailed that she video chatted with Johnson back in February and that he told her that his Star Wars trilogy was still in development.

At the time she wrote, “I’m just going to post this now because I can see that I’m going to get a lot of requests – Yes, Rian’s SW trilogy is still on. No dates or timelines because he has other projects going on, but it is happening. THAT IS ALL I KNOW ABOUT IT.”

Now, Wilson is claiming that Johnson informed her he spoke to Dave Filoni about directing an episode of The Mandalorian.

Wilson wrote, “I asked Rian if he’d ever consider doing an episode of The Mandalorian. He Said he was dying to, but that for him it’s all about scheduling.”

“He’s been writing [Knives Out 2] and now he’s going to go directly into filming it. So it would be a matter of finding time to break away and do it.”

In a subsequent tweet she added, “He said he has spoken to Dave Filoni about it. He had gone and visited the set during Season 1. He said it was so cool and I told him I was very jealous. He had seen ‘Baby Yoda’ months before the reveal.”

She continued, “He said it was fascinating seeing the way that they’re shooting the show. He asked if I’d seen BTS stuff (of course I have). He said when he was standing there in that space and they did the thing where they moved the camera and the perspective on the screen shifted he said he almost fell over. You get vertigo.”

Wilson concluded, “That it’s almost like virtual reality. That it’s fascinating and feels so real when you’re standing there. It’s really interesting to see how it translates onscreen.”

Interestingly, scooper WDW Pro responded to these comments by Wilson over at Pirates and Princesses by claiming that the fact Johnson was asking Filoni to direct an episode is evidence that Kathleen Kennedy can not touch The Mandalorian.

WDW Pro states, “Kathleen Kennedy can’t touch The Mandalorian! That’s Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni’s baby, and she couldn’t get Johnson or anybody else a directing gig on the show if she tried. It’s off limits to her.”

He reiterated, “And sure, she and others can screw Lucasfilm, Star Wars, and Disney+ up plenty, but we’ve been accurate that KK is not allowed to dictate anything when it comes to the Favloni Universe.”

However, Pro would also state, “That’s why all she can do is fire big names from Lucasfilm in a way that sabotages the whole thing. That’s not the whole story there, but this article isn’t about Gina Carano, so I’m not fully going into that again.”

That appears to be a contradiction. If Kennedy supposedly can’t touch The Mandalorian wouldn’t that mean that she wouldn’t be able to fire one of the stars of the show? Firing Gina Carano definitely allows her to touch The Mandalorian.

And if she can fire Gina Carano, it’s not hard to imagine that she could fire Favreau and Filoni too if she wanted. She is the President of Lucasfilm after all.

As for Wilson’s claims about Johnson, I’ll believe it when I see it. Lucasfilm announced Johnson was getting his own trilogy just before the release of The Last Jedi back in 2017. There hasn’t been nary a peep since then other than vague comments by Johnson and his proxies claiming it’s still happening. No actual movement has happened.

In contrast, we’ve gotten more movement on two projects helmed by Patty Jenkins and Taika Waititi that more than likely weren’t even being discussed when The Last Jedi came out.

And Wilson appears to be confirming that no actual movement is happening in regards to him directing an episode of The Mandalorian either. As WDW Pro points out if Johnson wanted to truly direct an episode of The Mandalorian, he would make room in his schedule.

Robert Rodriguez revealed he was a last-minute replacement for an unnamed director in Season 2 of The Mandalorian. And that he went right to work following the completion of his Netflix film We Can Be Heroes.

What do you make of Johnson asking Filoni about directing The Mandalorian?
