Horror-Icon Elvira Joins Call To Remove Joe Rogan From Spotify, Dismisses Fans Who Disagree With Her As “Trash”
Cassandra Peterson, the iconic horror personality better known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, has not only become the latest celebrity to demand that Spotify deplatform Joe Rogan, but also dismissed those who disagree with her opinions as “trash.”
The most recent campaign to deny Rogan a platform was sparked on January 24th when musician Neil Young demanded that the audio streaming platform either remove the podcaster from their service entirely or face losing their licensing rights to his entire catalog of music.
“I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines – potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them,” wrote Young in a January 24th letter to his management team. “Please act on this immediately today and keep me informed of the time schedule.”
“I want you to let Spotify know immediately TODAY that I want all my music off their platform. They can have Rogan or Young. Not both,” he declared.
Following in the footsteps of such prominent individuals as WHO General Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, fellow musician Joni Mitchell, and Fox Nation’s COPS: All Access host Geraldo Rivera, Peterson announced her support for Rogan’s removal from Spotify on January 31st, tweeting from her personal account, “I stand with musicians and artists, not with quacks and hacks.”
She then proceeded to ask her followers to sign a moveon.org petition calling on the powers that be to “Remove the Joe Rogan podcast from Spotify NOW!”, telling them, “This cause is close to my heart.”
Unsurprisingly, Peterson’s call to arms was met with a massive amount of pushback from her fans, many of whom found themselves stunned at the fact that such a purveyor of the macabre and sexy would call for censorship of another creator.
In explanation of her position to one such fan (whose initial tweet has since been deleted), Peterson asserted, “The Joe Rogan podcast interviews the 5% of ‘scientists’ who do not believe in vaccines or masks. This is not about censorship. This is about saving lives. Please read the article and educate yourself. XX.”
(It should be noted that it’s not clear what specific piece of writing Peterson was referring to when telling the fan to “read the article,” as the only link she provided was to the aforementioned petition, which itself only features a brief description of the situation.)
Amidst further pushback from her fans, Peterson’s rhetoric then took an even more insulting turn, as the B-movie connoisseur proceeded to declare in a follow-up to her original tweet, “Regarding ‘fans’ (haha) who are leaving me because they prefer ‘disinformation’ over the truth, all I can say is, it’s time to clean house and separate the class from the trash! Buh-byeeee!”
“For the people who call this ‘censorship’….Would it be ok if I had a podcast inviting ‘experts’ to encourage people to drive drunk?” she further argued, falsely equating the advocation of an illegal act with the discussion of, at worst, fringe opinions on emerging medical news. “‘If I crash and kill myself, big deal, it’s MY problem.’? How about the people you kill or injure in the other car? Do they matter at all to you?”
The horror hostess then continued to engage with her fans, doubling down on her stance that Rogan’s podcast was physically dangerous and further insulting those who found themselves at odds with her censorious wishes.
“Huge fan. Have always been since the movie macabre days. But I can’t follow this call for censorship,” lamented @Sp0ngeR0b. “@joerogan has openly invited experts to discuss Covid (Both sides).”
“Buh-byeeeee!” replied Peterson. “Don’t let the door hit’cha in the ass on the way out.”
Despite finding themselves opposed to the viewpoints espoused on Rogan’s podcast, @18Whiskey reasoned to Peterson, “I don’t agree with Rogans guest at all & I don’t believe we need to cancel people bc they have views different than ours, no matter how polar. Simply don’t listen to him. U aren’t going to change people’s mind that believe in that side of the science. All it does is reinforce their belief.”
“The only problem is….he’s hurting and killing people with this disinformation,” she fired back. “I don’t believe in censorship, but I don’t believe in KILLING even more. Gotta make choices.”
Replying to @WBottomfellows, who pointed out how Peterson’s career “literally would not exist without the right to free expression,” the Mistress of the Dark retorted, “I never existed by bringing ill-informed ‘experts on health’ during a pandemic onto my show.”
“Why play Devil’s advocate with actual scientists for ratings?”, she asked. “You can do that, but there are real consequences. We don’t have the luxury of time to play that game right now.”
When another user suggested “listening to the podcast itself and seeing what was said” in response, noting that Rogan was merely “asking questions that a LOT of people had,” Peterson exclaimed, “I HAVE!”
“Uninformed ‘health experts’” who shout their views from the rooftops are potentially very dangerous, because others look up to them and shout the same words. Sound familiar??” she stated. “People are dying because they trusted ‘the experts’. I’m not ok with that. Neither should you be.”
As of this article’s writing, Peterson has continued to engage with both supporters and critics of her stance on Joe Rogan, most recently explaining to one fan who was disappointed at “being called trash for not agreeing with you” that – in an obvious backpedal – “trash = people who were never fans to begin with and who have come to attack.”
